in your own opinion (spec sheets only say so much) how much more shit do you need to run this on high/med than bc2?
If it could run BC2 at high then this will run even better at high

I usually get around 50fps in BC2 with everything on max, so DICE have managed to squeeze an extra 20fps out of the engine.

The main part that need replacing is the processor, but i will also be getting a new case and some other things.

ted your 4850 should be fine.  If anything buy another 4850 off ebay and crossfire it buy thats if you want high all round.

frostbite is more cpu dependent, if you've got a quad core then you're good to go.

Thats all i have, and tbh if its shit for BF3 I would rather just use this PC in my study as a full time business computer/server.

It runs quake live on high at about 60fps.

But thats the only game i play whilst waiting for BF2.

I have specced a system up for just a smidge over £2k, what do you think ?
The current cpu etc and a 260 GTX (216) ran BC2 for me but I could only run it on medium at 1680x1050

I got a computer similar to that with a 28' monitor for 500£ less (got it for 2200$ dollars) It had:
Nvidia GTX 590
Cheap Gaming Case
Hans G 28'
Same power supply
Intel I7 2600k 3.4 ghz
Cheap asus motherboard, no sli
Corsair Vengenace 2x4Gb 1600 mhz DDr3
1 TB 7200 RPM HD
Liquid Cooler CPU+Fans
DVD Writer

Your computer is great BF3, I just think you are spending too much money on it.

you will need a bigger SSD than that, windows 7 and BF3 will take up 90% of 60gb, the 128gb Crucial m4 is the best on the market at the moment

also you might want to look at the MSI GTX580 Lightning Edition because it was the best reviewed card I could find when I bought mine a few weeks ago, and its cheaper than the one you've got on the list.

I would agree with everything jmsprovan said concerning the SSD and the change in video card, also as far as I am aware on a single 24" monitor (presumably run at 1920x1080) you should not need the 3GB version of the 580 as there will be little to no performance difference compared to the 1.5GB models.

Oh and that RAM will not fit underneath a Noctua NH-DH14, I would personally suggest this instead but if not Noctua has a list of all compatible motherboards and RAM.

My rig is finally starting to show its age in these newer games.

I think my settings are mostly medium with a few high on 1680x1050 but it doesn't always run completely smooth.  Haven't benchmarked it though

I got a Core 2 Quad Q9550 with 4GB of RAM and a GTX 260 216-core and I haven't reformatted my computer to 7 x64 yet(still running 7 x86) not that I can see that making much difference.  I gotta get a job so I can finally play this game in DX11 or at least on max settings on DX10, although I've heard that the Beta only has DX10 anyway.

Everybody I've seen seems to be playing BF3 on an i5, is it possible my C2Q is also bottlenecking me like my videocard?

nope your quad is fine. your graphics card is the bottleneck

bf3 is optimised for dx11 so get a dx11 card.

Respectable performance here.  This is close to what I have planned.  Although, I will prob hold on to my 5850 untill the HD7000 series hits.  Thanks Broski!

Has anybody with pre GTX 4xx/5xx cards tried the 285.35 drivers and seen a difference?  I understand they're optimized for the newer cards but I'm wondering if any improvements trickled down to the older cards anyway.

Ugh really hate this. HD4870 can probably easily handle this game on low (which is fine for me since it looks fine on low) however my e8400 is bottlenecking it. Can't really upgrade the CPU without upgrading the mobo eitherl and most likely will have to buy new RAM and probably a new PSU if I do upgrade the mobo aswell. F my life.
