Ah I see. But I don't think a 5.8 would do structural damage other than breaking windows and knocking items off of store shelves.

Yeah it doesn't seem to have done too much. There are some pictures on the link I posted before showing stock fallen off shelves, liquefaction and some pretty dramatic pictures of cliffs that have come down and the dust over the CBD. Doesn't seem too bad though.

One Aussie news channel is reporting that three unoccupied buildings collapsed. Most likely just saved demolition teams the job.

We've had aftershocks since this article was posted, so that means 10,000 earthquakes since September 4, 2010.  I plan to mark this occasion by drinking a glass of aftershock:

So my house is being repaired now, the easy jobs are being done first.

Its mostly just plaster cracks above doors & windows, but because of rebuild regulations even one tiny crack means the whole room has to be redone to the same standard as before (papered, painted), and you get to choose your replacement paper/paint.  We're not moving out while this is being done, due to the short timeframe and lack of temporary accommodation around the city (10000 houses unavailable, 80% of hotel rooms gone), but the crew is pretty clean so its not too bad.

Insurance is going up by $200/year and rates (payment to city council) by $100/year, not too bad all things considered.

AWSMFOX, did you see the CBD/Colombo Street?  It sure looks a lot more open now huh.  I do kind of like the open air and all that light coming in, but the lack of people around is just weird.

Uzique, both cathedrals are demolition jobs now.  I understand the Catholic one is going to be rebuild as-is, but the Anglican one (which is in the square and gets most of the attention) they're not so sure of.  Theres the usual local politics/bickering which you'd expect - some people are calling for it to be rebuild as it was, some want a modern cathedral, and some want it moved.

Just saw this:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6750760 … -cathedral

There is going to be a temporary cathedral built - from cardboard - on the site of another Church, St Johns, in Latimer Square.

Yeah! that was the main area that copped it hey? Columbo street is what I remember most from 08 so it was quite unreal. I do like what they've done with the shipping containers, it looks really good, and if theres any more it's easy enough to rebuild.

The CBD, wider 4-avenues area and eastern suburbs mostly.  I would say between 60 and 90% of it will be goneburgers, difficult to say how much.

I tell you what, not having shitloads of bars to go to means my wallet is getting a bit of a rest!

As the rumours surrounding the rebuild/demo are settling, it looks like 80-85% of the CBD will have been demolished once all of the demolition work has been completed.  From looking/driving around, it would appear that 60-65% has been cleared already.  A few buildings have already started going up and one or two might have already been completed.

Our Prime Minister met the Queen recently, apparently she has received quite a bit of mail concerning the fate of the Cathedral (in the square) and had a couple questions for John Key, though they seemed fairly innocuous.  The local debate is what to do with it - demo/rebuild, restore etc.  A lot of people are getting quite worked up over it.  Many want to save/restore it, and many want it gone for good.  Personally, I'm of the opinion that if CERA (Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority) says its unsafe then it should be bowled, and that the decision on what to do beyond that should be left with the Anglican church as its their building/land/money, and telling them what they can & can't do is taking away their right to freedom of religion.

We had a 5.2 a couple of weeks ago.  Since then I've noticed a couple of new cracks (where none previously were) in our freshly-repainted house.  Could be time for another EQC claim.

I wouldn't normally bother posting about a royal commission enquiry concerning one building..hell I don't even read them most of the time..but this building accounted for 2/3 of the casualties for that shake, and was probably the most 'international' hit the city took.  This is the biggest part of the blame game, and I expect a few heads to roll from this.

One person, a former manager for the firm which built the CTV building, has declined to appear at the inquest and can't be compelled to appear due to him no longer residing in NZ.  It has been discovered that the guy was convicted of fraud in 2005, for falsifying tax returns and misleading a guy who purchased his business:

I won't be at all surprised to see some Australian & NZ news crews hounding this guy in the near future.
