l4d1 / l4d2 are only good if you have at least 2 friends to play it with. And l4d1 is pretty dead.

Where is Killing Floor?

EDIT: I missed the "other" option

Dead Space was scary, but they weren't zombies.
L4D 1/2 were genuinely scary at times, especially on your first play-through. Great fun with mates too.
Dead Rising was just too hilarious to take seriously, sorta like Killing Floor.

Gotta hand it to L4D.

I would highly suggest that you get L4D2.
Because it already contains one campaign from the first game, and the upcoming, free DLC will bring the remaining campaigns too, basically merging both games into L4D2.

Other.

'Dead Space' is a 'Doom' shocker.
'Left 4 Dead' is an action game.
'Dead Rising' is action/comedy.

'Thief II: The Metal Age' has better 'horror' value than any of these. But if you want a dedicated horror game, go with 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent.'

Oh no, you made me remember the level with the invincible, mechanical golden child!
That was so creepily absurd.

Only remotely scary campaign in L4D(2) was the no mercy campaign, the rest just wasn't really scary but fun to play. Downside to this game (to me) is that I don't have any friends that play it. But I don't have any friends on steam that i actively play with so its no big deal, I'm used to it.

It's hard to feel like a victim in a game that calls itself 'horror' when you have a giant compensating GUN that immediately turns everything you meet into lumps of intestinal gravy. Thus, the scariest 'gun' game I played was AvP2, when you weren't sure exactly what on your motion detector was an alien waiting to instagank you past your smart gun, what was a cloaked predator barely showing up on scanners, and what is just a dangling chain swinging about in the breeze.

I had AvP1 for while and it was great wallcrawling fun, until I lost the disc and my hardrive got wiped. Too bad Iheard the new AvP sucks, I was actually looking forward to it for a while.

That's because AvP3 is a flop. You cover too much of the same ground from uncreative directions in the single player campaigns, Alien navigation is messed up, high jump for predators is clumsy as fuck and marines can't duck. Nobody wanted to play that shit in multiplayer, so we saw a brief burst of AvP2 servers becoming suddenly repopulated.

AvP 1 is available on Steam. Give AvP 2 a shot, too.

Ah, I guess I have to get that for the price of €2.99, even if I already have it retail, because it has been integrated into Steam.

But wasn't there something that it isn't compatible with the original retail version?

True, the sequel is better in every aspect, especially in multiplayer with the Alien life cycle enabled usable exosuit.
Also, some great weapons, like the Predator's net gun: You could escape much faster as Marine by cutting the net with your knife.
(Totally reminded me of "Rise Of The Triad", where the Nazi officers trapped you with net guns and you could only wait for a long time or escape by using a knife that you had to pick up from certain statues. )

Except for one point that really made me sad: You can not destroy light sources (ceiling lights) anymore!
It was really great to completely darken a room as the Alien in AvP1 multiplayer, then sit still in a corner on the ceiling and wait for your pray.
The Marines couldn't use nightvision and the motion tracker at the same time, so they either tried to spot you in the dark or see your motion (or spam flares and blind themselves).
