I still prefer a road atlas myself. I've always had a gift for memorizing directions easily so I usually just use the GPS as a backup to make my nervous gf less nervous in the car

GPS devices aren't the hardest things in the world to use, nor do they ever fuck up or do something stupid. I don't get it. I wouldn't use a paper map instead of a GPS device unless I had to...

Not saying they're difficult to use at all. Just saying that I prefer to visualize the route I'm going to take on a piece of paper before I drive it. Doing the same on a GPS device is not nearly as easy. Instead of getting the big picture, all you get is step by step directions. I'm just a big picture kind of guy.

Good morning, class.  I am Sergeant RDX.  My assistant trainers are 11 Bravo and eleven bravo.  Don't mix them up, or you will be doing push-ups until they get bored. Today's block of instruction will be Remedial Land Navigation. Fail this block of instruction, and you will be attending Remedial Taliban Sex Education and SORE training, with Sergeant SEREMaker.

I failed land nav The course at Benning was complete shit. A tornado went through a few months prior and knocked down a good 1/4 of the forest so I spent all day attempting to walk through fallen trees rather than around so I wouldn't lost my mark

Raining and poor visibility or not... this should not have happened. There have been GPS errors before, but this takes the cake.

I'd suggest box routing nice 90° legs around the fallen timber, but sounds like that would've taken you into the next county.

Land Nav course I went through in PLDC had a couple of specific sections designed to weed out a couple of specific errors.

One, the NoGo Forest, a tightly packed grove of planted Christmas trees, that you either boxed around (as above) or No-go'd the course after you screwed up and tried to bull your way through it.

Two, was Calvary Lane, a semi-cleared field in the middle of a forest, with giant 8" x 8" posts stuck into the ground, designed to weed out "pole magnets". i.e., people that were unsure of their headings or pace count and would shave a few degrees off their heading, or a few tens of meters off their pace count to "pole magnet" to a post that was "eh, good 'nuff".
Calvary Lane was not anything to do with dudes on horses - it was a subtle reference to This Calvary, Golgotha, place where people came to be cruified on very large posts in the ground.

Oh, and honorable mention goes out to the thumbtack hidden under the root, on the backside of a dead tree, at a key point in the land nav course where you had to make a very critical 45°-60°ish  turn on a long leg of the course.  Then you had a back azimuth to get your heading for the next long leg.  If you guessed the color of the thumbtack, and SWAG'd the azimuth for the next leg, you missed landing in Calvary Lane, and ended up in a clearing where the NOGO Truck was waiting to take you to recycle-ville.  Hint: referencing the radio tower on the hill would get you to the nogo wagon.

There is one setting that can do this; it's the travel route setting. Having your GPS set to the "shortest route" (instead of the convenient or fastest route) will take you to the back-roads, especially if you are driving through the open-country. My past experience with my GPS has taken routes where the road no longer exist. The convenient of fastest route setting will keep you on the major highways and interstates.

There's also an avoidance feature which the person can set to avoid like toll roads, highways, etc.

It was bound to happen sooner or later and this will not be an isolated incident. people need to understand or fully utilize their GPS more.
