on the way to uni, i guess somehow my computer died. or maybe when i first connected it up to the power in my new house (which runs macbook and everything else fine) it died. i don't know. anyway... it wont even power on. it just has a red flashing light on the mobo. i have looked far and wide and there is next to no useful documentation from my mobo manufacturer about the light codes-- only POST beeps and blips. so yeah, i have a dead computer and im guessing my mobo has fried? im going to open up the case today when i get some spare time and check everything is connected. but surely it's a pretty major problem if it wont even power on? furthermore, how does a PSU or mobo die just in car-transport?

it's possible that during transport, some parts got knocked around. Checking all power cables are secured inside would be a good idea.

that's all I can think of, unless something really got bumped, and you cracked a board or something....

It would be physically impossible to crack the actual PCB. Crack a chip...maybe. Especially if you had a large heatsink on and you didn't take it off for transport.

Physically inspect everything, but the problem there is the only things that could have gone wrong would be motherboard, cpu, memory, and psu, and you can only check the majority of two of them fairly easily. But I mean if you haven't even checked if everything is still connected do that first. I would guess power is only partially connected to your motherboard before anything.

I'd start by unplugging everything, then plugging it all back in again. Make sure you reseat the RAM and things like that.

it doesnt go into POST. there is no power getting through... nothing starts-up.

and yeah well, i didnt think putting a tower in the back of a car, packed tightly so it cant move, would damage the insides. call that naivety... but ive moved the computer back and forth from london about 10-15 times and have never had anything break or give in. have left the tuniq tower on everytime too. i love my tuniq tower :>

ive looked into bridging the circuit with a screwdriver. i'll give it a try once i narrow things down. have the case open now having a poke around. i think i might have shorted the motherboard by trying to plug in an external hard-drive (via USB) when it was connected to the power/mains. i saw a small spark come from the USB connector as it made contact with the case metal. have done that many times before, though, whilst not thinking or just in a hurry to connect/disconnect/reconnect a drive or two. perhaps i just got unlucky... or just got what was coming to me.

any ideas if something seemingly so small could literally take a mobo/PSU out?

and i cant be fucked dicking around buying new mobos and new PSU's and spending out when it may or may not be the cause

and a bundle is like £450-500... meh

i can't warrant paying £750+ to just play team fortress 2, a game from 2007.

if anything i'll get a shitty office desktop for essays and uni work.

i prefer doing long pieces of work on a pc. it's a better 'workstation'. the mac is convenience when im on campus and at the library.

i 'need' a desktop but im not gonna spend gaming-pc money anymore. the industry is too crap.

You can spend about $600 or so for a modest build, maybe even shave off $100 or so if you re-use the case.

I couldn't imagine buying a pre-built or cheap-o PC anymore.

ed: This was after poking through newegg a bit for a friend who doesn't do PC gaming but wanted a new PC for pretty much what you're after.
