... for the first time in my life

So yesterday evening, somehow or another, the conversation steered towards my parents' generation of music and then onto the music that they have on vinyl records. Then it occurred to me, I have never, ever heard a vinyl being played. And if I have, I have certainly never operated a turntable myself.

This afternoon I decided to see if I could find their vinyl records and a means to play them. Sure enough, in the loft (attic) was a reasonably old, but not that old, hi-fi system with a turntable on it and a couple of boxes of records. My mum said that dad has some pretty rare ones, that might well be worth a lot of money - though I'm not entirely sure which ones.

I dusted it all off, found some speakers and the necessary cables and plugged it in.

It worked! So I flicked through the sleeves. Plenty of things that I recognised, some that I didn't. Lots of Cliff Richard (presumably my mum's?), The Beatles, and Queen. There was also a load of stuff that I had no idea my dad listened to - that I have listened to, and enjoy. He has quite a lot of electronic music.

Here's a couple of pictures of the records that caught my eye.

This may not interest anyone, but I find it all pretty fascinating. This fact might even suprise some of you older ones, or indeed, some of you more "experienced" with music. The whole thing of taking the record out of it's sleeve, slotting it on to the turntable and putting the arm & needle to the start of the record and hitting play is just exciting in every way. Then when it plays there's some crackles and pops and all of a sudden this crisp sounding music appears out of nowhere. Magic!

Anyone else got a collection of vinyls? Does anyone here actually listen to them? (Or even have a means to play them?)

I hope I inspire some people to go see if their parents have any vinyl and/or a record player.

Gonna spend the afternoon listening to music the way old people used to listen to it. Shame it doesn't scrobble, eh?

I know there's a vinyl thread in this section too

The first time? Blasphemy.

My dad, mom, and uncle were all DJs, so I have a little experience with vinyl.

I also have some record cases hanging on my wall.

Nothing is a better medium for music than vinyl.  The depth and aesthetics of listening to a record snap and pop is just amazing in every way.  The timing of this thread is interesting because I just recently set up my turntables again.  I would say 99% of my vinyl is jazz/hip-hop/reggae, but I have a few holdover punk records from high school too.  Love playing vinyl.  Love it.

Those are some good records, still prefer the sound of vinyl to CD - although I only owned one or two records.
Vinyl was such hassle, one slip and its scratched forever.

Nearly all of my dad's records are in their original plastic (cellophane?) wrapping. He's such a pedant.

Heh, I did this myself for the very first time with my parents old records and record player about two months ago. Completely blew my mind when I realized you can actually hear the needle itself playing the music.

Hmm, so the new needle I bought doesn't seem to be as good (broke the old one). Perhaps it's my imagination, but the quality has definitely dropped.

During the narrated bits of The War of the Worlds it kinda sounds like he's speaking through a fan. You know, they make your voice go funny.

As a toy buy some technics and an amp and just play those records mixing bits in from here n there.

All our vinyl records melted in the heat one day, gutted.  I have at one time owned over 1000 cd's, but stupidly gave a lot of them away 15 years ago.

There are many different quality levels for needles - probably very little available now, and MM or MC may be optimal for your system.

MM / MC?

I just typed in the hi-fi model number, found the part number for the needle from the online manual, typed that in on eBay and bought the first ones I saw (2 for £10). I wasn't expecting quality, just wanted something that worked.

Well it's a pretty old turntable & hi-fi so it's lower quality than CD. Lost quality due to the cheap needle I bought, too.

Moving magnet or moving coil.
mm = moving magnet cartridge with high output and 47 Kohm impedance
mc = moving coil cartridge with low output usually and 100 ohm impedance
http://www.moving-coil-cartridges.com/

I think each turntable/preamp will require one or the other, so picking the model number should have got you that.

They can get gunged up internally, did you get new or used?

(As you're not in the £100+ bracket you probably aren't getting 'quality' )

Brand new. (at least according to the eBay page)

Yeah, I had a quick look around. I suppose I wasn't expecting amazing quality, but I wasn't aware of how much variation (in price and presumably therefore quality) there actually is. Seems like you can easily spend a whole load of money on this kind of thing.

Like my mum informing me that she had all the bettles albums plus around 50 other LPs from 60-70s. She binned them when CDs came out and replaced the LPs with CDs.
I nearly cry every time I think of that................

I have around 20 LPs, mostly old stuff. I have winston churchills memoires on LP box set which I think would be worth money except that one is missing from the set, its the one with the famous "we will fight the on the beaches...................." bit. The fucker I bought it off held onto that one incase I ever tried to make money on it and he would have to be in on the deal. Only cost me £10 tho.
