OK I'm pretty bad at poker, as in I win sometimes but not regularly, but I've never met anyone who ALWAYS wins. Sure some people seem to have better luck than others but isn't it all just luck? I've been trying to work out where the actual SKILL lies in this game? If you're playing face-to-face I guess it's to do with fooling the other people somehow, body language etc., but if you'tre playing online it's just pure luck isn't it? Who wants to tell me why any poker payer is 'better' or more 'skilfull' than any others, or am I correct that anyone who wins is just a lucky s.o.b.? And what are the best tricks and techniques for winning?
You can't always win. You can be very good and win a lot, but some of it is always down to luck. The actual skill lies on how good you can bluff and play other players. It's your decisions and reading of the game that allow you to win regularly, not the cards you get. The cards you get are random and are not based on your skill (unless you count cards) and therefore you rely on your reading of other people, their actions and how you should react towards them to get a good win or to fold if you see you can't win anything.

No but yeah i've played Poker a few times with friends. I did fairly well. In fact I seem to remember I won most of the time. All I did was the opposite of a poker face, and made a big deal out of every hand of cards I got. I also did a lot of folding.

There is both skill and luck in Poker. When you get good cards going all in isn't skillful, but looking at everyone's pots and remembering previous rounds and then betting accordingly is skillful. To draw as much into the pot when you know you can win is just one aspect of skill.

Poker isn't about the winning. It's about making lots of money when you win and losing small amounts when you lose. That's how to be good at poker. Winning lots of hands helps, but isn't very important.

I tend to just wait until I've got a killer hand and then start betting properly, at which point everyone else folds I guess thats not bluffing properly...
If you are known to bet only when you have a good hand, as it seems is the case, your opponents usually won't stay in if they see you contributing to the pot.
Knowing your percentages, reading the cards, grasping the concept of pot odds, knowing when to slow-bet, when to bet big, when to fold, what cards are worth playing pre-flop.
Lots of stuff. Sadly, I'm too much of a mathematical and systematic poker player, if you will. I'm not one that'll limp in for fun, and, sadly, I'm prone to bluffers. Lots to learn, lots to work on

Jens, what is your opinion on cards to play pre-flop? I can't really discern a good pattern to use, because a 2-7 off-suit or something ostensibly terrible like that can suddenly become golden with good flop. Though I like folding poor hands, I've been thinking it really makes the most sense to stay in each hand to the flop (provided there is no pre-flop raise.)
So whats the best way to rake in the case then? Top ten poker tricks or something?
you need to play all day everyday. plain and simple. aint that complicated.
