It's been about a year and a half since the shit really hit the fan. And still unemployment sits at awful levels. The economy is still in the dumps. Where is all the progress promised by our politicians? I'm not just singling out Obama here, but all of the politicians. They all claim that this or that will work for us, when in reality it'll only work for the people who line their pockets.

Where are all these jobs that were supposed to be created by the Recovery act? Everybody is screwed. People with little qualifications have to compete with people with better qualifications. People with high qualifications still get screwed because they're deemed "too costly" to a company even though I'm sure anyone would stick with a company for a long while if they got employed in this depression.

And even worse we continue to outsource our jobs. Rather than keeping Americans employed, we keep people in far away lands employed. All so that the corporations who generously donate to the politicians can continue to afford to do so.

Is nobody else starting to seethe with rage about this?

It's been a lot longer than a year and a half. We outsource our jobs because we don't want to pay $600 for an iPod.

How much longer though? Every day the talking heads all say how one day unemployment is going down, then it's stagnant, then what the fuck.

And while the worst of times started a year and a half ago, I recall talks of a recession as early as late 2007.

They should be. We let them feed us the same lies every election and it has gotten us nowhere.

Take a leaf out of my youngest brother's book and go somewhere where this is a job. He was in London, then moved to Australia for a year, is currently in Toronto and is planning to go to Argentina.

Recessions are part of the natural economic cycle. Get used to it. At least it is teaching a generation of pampered softies the value of employment, money and prudence.

Why are you listening to talking heads?

Economics doesn't operate on your most convenient time scale. We had economic property for more than a decade, why people believe economic downturns won't last just as long is beyond me.

Politicians talk big but they have about [] this much positive impact on the economy. They can fuck it up to impossible to extricate levels but they can't create a single job on their own.

Article is stupid. I know you mean well but the title was completely misleading. Having a larger debt than the amount of money in print is hyperbole at it's finest. Most money exists in electronic form only but it's just as real as the dollar bill in my pocket.

Now there is some sound advice, move to where the work is. Sorry Cam, your brother (is it braddock?) did not come up with that idea, he followed it. Another success story from a person who did not sit back and allow "luck" to guide them.

My youngest brother Denis. Braddock is still doing his PhD. Denis is just following in the footsteps of my father, who went wherever the work was - mechanic in a garage, construction on North Sea oil rigs, labouring wherever a boom was happening - until he came to rural economic blackspot Donegal to look after his widowed mother.

Its been going on longer than that. The artificial inflation of the minimum wage had and has a lot to do with our current problems. Think about it, you force a raise in starting salaries through out the nation. Those companies then have to raise the pricing of their goods due to the fact that the work force costs more. Just because the entry level gets a pay raise does not mean the people already working and earning more than minimum get an increase. Yet they still have to pay more for the goods they were purchasing prior to the increase. Thus you have inflated pricing of goods and the workforce cannot afford to purchase them.

Any economic policy changes take a minimum of 12-24 months to have nay effect on the Economy at all, and employment levels lag behind what is happening in GDP growth. Also take note this recession was meant to be as bad or worse then then the great depression which lasted almost 4 years. 18 months is just the beginning.

That is complete bullshit. I bet all those companies were still pumping out billion dollar profits and paying the CEOs and upper management multimillion dollar bonuses. Not to mention Australian has a minimum wage three times that of the US and is one of the few economies to not enter a recession and by far the best performing developed nation over the past decade.

Not really.  Very few jobs pay minimum wage, and the few that do tend to employ illegals anyway.

So, the minimum wage really doesn't help or hurt the economy.  All it does is give a few politicians the opportunity to pretend that they care.
