I have one prof who takes of 5% for each 1-100 words over the word-count, or part thereof. Each paper is 1000 words. Each requires at least 10 secondary sources. Each is a response to a 300+ page work on the European Union written by other prof's he hangs out with.
You would expect a short paper to be easier...but nooooo.
