That's right, the folks that brought us Chernobyl are thinking about cruising into space to tinker with our favorite, earth-flirting, asteroid.

Maybe I'm just an old cold warrior, but the thought of the Russians, the people who define half-assed, slipshod work, screwing with an asteroid that isn't even a threat, terrifies me. The best they can do is divert a disaster which isn't going to happen anyways. At worst, they inadvertently steer the thing into downtown Kalamazoo.

don't get me wrong, NASA's had more than it's share of fuck-ups.

My imression of Russian dysfunction has always been a combination of systemic nepotism and seriously underpaid, highly skilled engineers and operators whos only motivation is to not be visited by the KGB, or more recently, Putin's goons. Maybe it's completely different now, but from what I've seen and read of Putin's government, I doubt it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see anyone else doing anything about that asteroid. Even if the chance that an impact happens is very small, why not try it? The least it will bring is evidence if pushing an asteroid out of it's way is even possible right now or not. Could be useful later, who knows.
