I've got this junker computer that's stationed at my workbench for checking datasheets, acting as a WLAN-LAN bridge and such. It's currently got a 12,90€ Celeron D 330, which feels really rather slow when scrolling through big PDFs and viewing/resizing big pictures. Do you think there would be any performance increase by replacing it with any of the options above?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Have its slightly bigger brother in my old laptop, more than enough power for web and light image editing

Go with the 3200. Maybe even install a 64-bit OS on there?

Not with the 1GB RAM I have for that computer.

You can send me the Celly D then. Got a 2.0GHz Celly to replace with it in my parents' computer

Athlon 64 3200+ definately. Very decent CPU that time. I had 3500+.

3200+, Freezer you know the answer to this, why even ask?  I had the 3500 as well panzer, it was a good CPU back in the day (2003/4).

I never had an AMD machine back then. I rocked Prescott.

Methinks more RAM would help more than a CPU upgrade.  Once that PDF has completed loading, there is very little CPU overhead to scroll through it.  That is more about RAM, and how quickly your video card can redraw the screen.

No, it's the CPU that is/was the bottleneck. It went to 100% and stayed there when scrolling. It has 1GB RAM, so I doubt that'd do much.

OK, I've never seen a PDF cause such high CPU overhead.
