- Tony Blair has started the weaseling to become EU president
The whole UK parliamentary system needs a rethink. All the western democracys don't seem to work anymore.

So apparently according to his wife Tony 'wasn't so sure' about the Iraq war after all. Sounds like a load of bullshit to me, aimed at prepping Mr. Deeply Deeply Unpopular Religious Freak War Criminal for a shot at the new EU presidency.
"Tony Blair was branded a "war criminal" today by the father of a soldier killed in the Iraq war after a memorial service to honour the dead at which the Archbishop of Canterbury criticised "policy makers" for failing to consider the cost of the conflict.
Rowan Williams, who has previously described the decisions that led to the war as "flawed", praised the "patient and consistent" efforts of troops on the ground.
But he used his address at the national service of remembrance in St Paul's cathedral to remind his audience that the conflict, which claimed the lives of 179 British service personnel, remained highly controversial.
Among those in the congregation listening to his words was former prime minister Tony Blair, who led the country into war and who was confronted at a reception after the service by Peter Brierley, whose son, Lance Corporal Shaun Brierley, 28, was killed in March 2003.
Brierley refused to shake Blair's proferred hand, saying: "I'm not shaking your hand, you've got blood on it".
"I understand soldiers go to war and die but they have to go to war for a good reason and be properly equipped to fight," Brierley said.
"I believe Tony Blair is a war criminal. I can't bear to be in the same room as him. I can't believe he's been allowed to come to this reception. It comes back to me every day, every time I see a coffin come off a plane; it reminds me of what happened to Shaun.""
nice cut and paste. well done
err...thanks. what's your point?
Remind me, do the public actually get to vote for the EU president in one of those hopelessly long, over the top US elections, or do they fags in Brussels pick him?
Nope. Selected by agreement of the national governments comprising the EU. If you were buddies with enough prime ministers you could be President of the EU.Bell wrote:

It will be the equivalent of US state governors selecting a president by majority, as far as I can gather. The EU president will have vastly inferior powers to those exercised by the US president it must be stressed though.JohnG@lt wrote:

Well that's not strictly true either FT - he slipped out the back door before the economy and economic philosophy he advocated and nurtured imploded in spectacular manner.FatherTed wrote:

teflon tony as ever
Blackbelts are just whitebelts who have never quit.
Tony Blair did nothing positive for the UK, and as Campoe says his policies have all backfired.
Blair has done very nicely for himself though, as was clearly his plan from day one.
Sucking up to the Republicans, sucking up to Israel, its all money in the bank for him and screw the UK.

No surprise here - slimy self-important egotistical criminal urchins backing slimy self-important egotistical criminal urchins. On a positive note the article indicates that Merkel has persuaded Sarkozy not to back Blair, which given that Zapatero wouldn't go for Blair means he can toddle off into the obscure irrelevant sunset. Hoorah. Jean-Claude Juncker ftw.

Don't know who this guy is but even if he's a baby-eating Scientologist he's preferable to Blair.

The papers are filled with euphoric headlines over here. It's like we've won the world cup.
