that's exactly what I'm doing

I had everything together and I'm pretty sure it would have worked except the caps I bought were 1/5th the capacitance they should have been, christ.

Have you checked Ebay? You can often find great deals on used oil caps there.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Winston/freezer/etc. - I was just informed I have to work more hours so I'm definitely thinking about buying those KRK Rokit 5s. A few questions though.

- what's the difference between vanilla and g2? I'd assume g2 means 2nd gen.
- I was reading a few reviews and some were concerned with lack of bass. Can I just add any ole sub? If I do, how much would it cost? Would I need an amp too? I'd be using these for music, personal listening. May use then for smaller parties as well. I'd say $500 hard limit, and desk space is limited.

Thanks for the help.

Thats a pretty big increase in budget... Is it actually KRK Rokit 5 range, or $500 range?

Also, what kind of bass are you looking for?  Ground shaking bass?  No, it doesnt have that but unless you're hosting a club in your room its more than enough.  The people that say its not bassy enough are the ones that think since their Logitech Z5500 can make the room shake it actually sounds good.  I've heard my friend's Rokits and their bass response is beautiful and clear.

Oh and no amp needed.

I got that same CPU.... ASUS P7P55 LX mobo... very happy with my purchase, other than I had to RMA my mobo. You will definitely be happy with BFBC2 performance with that CPU, what gfx card did you get?

Well I was looking on amazon and the rokits were $300 for a pair. I'll take your word for the bass, but just for giggles, could I hook up a sub if I desired?

Oh and thoughts g2 vs vanilla? I don't have access to a computer ATM so my searching skills are limited.

Go for Gen 2 if there's no significant price difference, they're supposed to be an improvement.

About the sub... I've never looked into it before, but from what I can see it apparently requires you to add the $400 KRK10 as your sub due to the wiring.  Honestly, just try them out for their bassyness and you'll be able to tell if you think theyre powerful enough.  Look up local audio stores, they probably have a pair you can try.

Edit: Well, other ones will probably work... its just that it looks like they have crossover frequencies which can cause some distortion.

$400 sub... I'll pass.

I'll search for some local stores, but amazon should be pretty good about returns.

So I installed Google Chrome. It's not as fast as a lightning bolt, by my estimation.

The one Google product I don't like.
Have tried several times to get used to it and use it a bunch, but haven't been able to tolerate it for very long.
Let us know how it's going in a week or two

Gahh..... my G7 is starting to act up. I did bend the usb dongle (on accident) thingy so that may be why. I'm surprised I didn't have any problems earlier, as I bent it about I dunno 2 months ago.

Those are literally the 3 best sets of speakers in their respective brackets.  It just depends on how much you want to spend, the more you spend the higher quality components/specs you'll get.  Whether it will be a discernible difference to you (or anyone) is highly debatable.

I would go with the Rokits myself, only because I've heard them myself and theyre quite sexy.

I'm concerned about the amount of space the cheapest ones will consume. I really don't have that much space available on my desk, and I think I need stands. I have my laptop on the far right side of my desk and currently it blocks my right side speaker.

Also if it makes any difference, my music is mostly 256kbps. I'm not the FLAC/lossless type.

Kimmmm, how big are the ones you have?

To be honest, considering you get stands with the KRKs thats an amazing deal.  Go for it!

You dont really need to be, my music is only V0, I have no need or desire for FLAC.

My only concern is needlessly spending on some high performance equipment that I wouldn't be able to utilize properly. If it's a fair upgrade from the others, I'd love to get them. Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to know the differences.

Although the size of the others kind of makes the decision for me.

They will be better.  The difference is totally up to your ears though.  But they are at a great deal, theyre usually $300 by themselves.  2 stands for an extra $30 is superb.

Getting very high quality speakers is not something you'll regret buying, trust me.  Between that and monitors, theyre a worthwhile investment.  $300 in speakers can last you years, not a lot has changed in audio in the past few decades.  Very future proof and will outlast any graphics card, processor, etc you have.
