Is it true that if two people have the exact same grades, a black man will make it into a college before a white man? Hell, I've heard that the black man will make it in even if the white man has a better GPA, SAT, ACT, blahblah whatever, just because he's black. Isn't this racism?
Whoever told you that bullshit is the racist.
My school has more international students than black students.
Yes. It's racist.
I used to hear similar stuff working for UPS. That is that sometimes a minority would get a position over someone more qualified (experience... etc) simply because they were a minority. Some higher ups would be very loose lipped when they had a few adult beverages in them.
I don't know if this applies to school admission though.
The question should be "Does affirmative action cause more discrimination than it prevents?".

Yes, I think it does.Kmarion wrote:

Well, since most of you have never heard of this, I guess it isn't true. People were recommending that I check 'Other' on standardized tests, because I was Polish and not white, even though I was white. But because I was Polish, it made me a miniority or something.
I think nearly everyone has heard of this.. or at least some variation. This means very little when it comes to validity either way imo.HaiBai wrote:

Yes it happens Haibai... I think the intentions are good but when someone is given a pass on having to have qualifications that other students have... It doesn't do any favor to the person they were trying to help. They have this issue at the Naval Academy...

Love is the answer
From someone who just went through college acceptance bullshit, it's very true.
Never heard of it happening here. But that doesn't mean it doesn't happen I guess. All I hear of here is people with rich parents get in simply because their parents make a large "donation".
Yeah it does happen quite a bit, there was even a Supreme Court case about it.Little BaBy JESUS wrote:

The Supreme Court ruled that race can be considered, along with other factors, when determining acceptance into schools.

who cares it just means that the white kid can start his career in retail or service sooner.
Edit: Moreover, trying to argue against it or its intrinsic unfairness gets you labeled a racist. It's ridiculous to think that a black person whose parents made over $200,000 a year somehow had less opportunity than a white kid whose parents made less than $50,000, and is consequently deserving of some "help" in the process over the white person; yet, it is not socially acceptable for a white person to posit such arguments. I'd recommend recognizing that you are going to be hindered in the process for being white, accept it, and being very glad in April when the stupidity and charades are finally over.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

its a load of crap.
I used to get this thrown at me because i'm ethnic minority and therefore i would be favoured for X. Ya right. I've been judged on merit, just like everyone else.

Blackbelts are just whitebelts who have never quit.
Maybe not for the UK, but it is extremely evident in the US.m3thod wrote:

You might get in coz you're black or whatever, but you might get kicked out first year due to low grades.
In my experience they let in loads of underqualified foreign students, overpopulating courses, simply to grab the higher tuition rates off them for a year then fail them and let the decent locals/foreigners that they actually wanted carry on after that.
I actually met a Ph.D student that I swear knew less than the freshers. Not too surprisingly he was using private funding off daddy....

Public schools usually do that. Think UBC and UC schools, lots of Asian kids want in.PureFodder wrote:

There was a kid up in the office running his mouth earlier this month. He was bragging about how he could go to whatever school he wanted to basically for free and all the scholarships he was going to get -for being a hispanic jew. I doubt it'll really happen for him (he a fat lazy pos)... I really had to refrain myself from smacking him.
