Should We Get Out of Afghanistan?

NY Mag wrote:

The Good War in Afghanistan, the one of which even liberal Americans used to say, "That one was necessary," is becoming both increasingly deadly and unpopular. As General Stanley McChrystal outlines a new strategy that will likely ask for more troops, a CBS poll shows that more and more Americans are in favor of bringing them home. Joining them in that sentiment today is columnist George Will, who writes, "Genius ... sometimes consists of knowing when to stop. Genius is not required to recognize that in Afghanistan, when means now, before more American valor ... is squandered." Many of his fellow conservatives couldn't disagree more.
Can the Afghans keep up the fight?  Can the Pakistani Army keep the pressure up with our support?  Is it time?

And there's still no dead/captured Osama Bin Laden.

I'd rather see the troops pullout than spend another decade in that shit hole, but only if the resources used in the Middle East were transferred to combating terror threats on US soil, increased airport security, etc.

Because if you drop the ball in Afghanistan it's bound to result in a stronger terrorist threat from within the US.

Afghans need greater training.

Say a few more years then we should go.

Afghan national army is a joke. Its like taking a bunch of 8th 5th graders and giving them M-16s (you let them live in a first world barracks, and they turn in into a third world dump)

Of course we can agree we don't need massive amounts of troops in Afghanistan to successfully hunt down a single man.  I would think a more clandestine route would be effective as well.

Brother of a kid who goes to my school. He was one of the guys killed in the operation. Extremely sad.

I'd still rather be in Afghanistan than in Iraq at this point...losing focus on Afghanistan was such a huge mistake. I honestly think we could've gotten OBL if we'd stayed the course and kept focus.

I'm sure they are trying that approach right now, also. But with very little effect thus far obviously.

Its lose-lose at present.

Go - Afghanistan becomes a fundamentalist paradise and haven for jihadists.
Stay - Fight a neverending war and steadily alienate or kill the population.

Needs a thought out strategy. I'd start with buying the entire opium crop and steadily shifting the farming over to something else.

Bombing the crap out of the country and carefully shepherding AQ into Pakistan was not very well thought out IMO.
Nor was making an enemy of the Taliban, scumbags that they are, or foisting US style 'democracy' which is basically unsuitable for the region.

Still pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter...(kind of, but not entirely, cba to put it well thought out right now, 1:15 AM)

Evidently, but would capturing/killing that one man effectively solve your problem?

Afghanistan is a mess tbh. My uncle is currently out there with ISAF, training illiterate Afghan officers to be artillery spotters. How in any way is that useful, even if there was any possibility of it being remotely successful? Once we leave, Afghanistan isn't going to have any artillery, so why not train them in something useful? We're wasting far too much manpower on roles that don't matter.

We're not used to fighting in a nation with such a high level of ignorance among the populace, and it's beginning to take it's toll, but if we leave now, Afghanistan will be worse than when we came in, and likely further destabilize Pakistan as well.

Nuking will do no good. All youll do is ruin their opium supply. I'd recommend Mercenaries, but thats illegal

We need to finish the job, unlike the "final pull-out" in Iraq.

Send in 250,000+ troops, Secure the place, police the country for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda
OR, if the corrupt Afghan govt cant become responsible for their action and responsibilities, gtfo.

Did you really just say that?
What exactly do you plan on nuking anyway, all those overt Al-Qaeda military bases? Good plan, batman.

Agreed we should stay the course, if we pull out and leave them to tear themselves apart, the lives of those civilians and NATO troops will have been lost for nothing.
