I may have posted in the wrong section.  Move if needed.
Tech or non tech (It's not that much related to computer)

However I'll have a few hundred $ to spend on a bass guitar and it's amplifier.
My two bros, one has a guitar and the other a drum.
I want to join in with a bass.
I want to buy a used one to start.
Let's say that my budget is under $500 CDN.
Preferably specs will follow budget unless what I say is crazy.
I like rock music and of course I have to take lessons.

OR if any good music instruments sites exist & if you can link'em for me, that would be good.
I'm in my early stage of looking for it, you'll find that I'm kind of noobish in that area.

Will only be back tomorrow since my home comp, again, is not wired and that i have to work in between posts.

I play bass and guitar, I've got a fender squire p-bass and a peavey millenium bxp.

The Peavey's damn good value for money, but you'll always want a fender, they're so nice to play, look at a fender jazz bass, or p-bass.

Absolutely not ... never buy a stringed instrument before playing it.

Find a local music/guitar shop and talk to the folks there. Chances are you'll find someone obsessed with the things and can give you a recommendation; far better then the pathos and ethos that's popping up here.

They are too heavy.

I say spend the bulk of your coin atm on the amp.

And for what it's worth I haven't played my ibanez once after I got my P bass.

Geddy Lee uses them too and that is the best endorsement there is.

Qft.
I'd go check out your local music shops and try to find one you like the feel of.

Personally I prefer Ibanez...but those that I have were fairly pricey. I've never particularly liked the look or feel of Fender basses.

I picked up a cheap Yamaha bass not long ago to use for practises etc, quite a nice setup and very lightweight (unlike my fave bass which weighs a ton!), I tweaked the setup a bit and it looks + feels great, especially for the price....a good starter instrument I'd say.

I'm just saying. He's a good bassist, and there's obviously a reason he uses one kind of bass over another.

Thing is, everyone's tastes are different...there are so many different musicians, playing so many different instruments; you need to find what works for you, not someone else

Buy something used and cheap from your local store. It won't matter too much what it is but Fender makes a squier version of their more expensive basses that are really nice for the money. If you find a bass or amp you are unsure of shoot me a PM, I'd be glad to help if I can.

@ATG Geddy plays a J bass not a P....I thought you were a fan

True, true. Still, if his style is more geared towards thrash then he might want to investigate basses that have been used by great thrash bassists

Used is always a good bet, but from a local store. I got a USA made fender Stratocaster (not any of this starcaster crap, lol) in great shape for 600, half of what it retails for. The guys at guitar center (at least the one here, and I dont know if you even have one) are always happy to help and answer questions.

Basically it's like buying a stereo system.  Go out play / listen, swap sources, pick and chose output device.

Thanks to all.

Even the most basic models Warwick makes are worth the look. A friend of mine has had one for years and has never switched or bought another bass. Really warm sound, great for jazz, not ideal for heavy metal. Hope this sort of helps.

Go to a music shop, play a whole bunch, find what you like and buy it. Taking suggestions will only get you opinions and at the end of the day that's not going to help you at all.
