Just some thoughts I've been kicking around in my head.

We humans think we are special on this earth.  We think we are above nature.  We think we are smarter than this planet that has shaped itself for billions of years.  We forget that we are simply another animal.  Yes, our brain has evolved us into the most unique  species on this planet.  But there are forces at work in this universe that our feeble minds cannot begin to comprehend, just as the mind of an ant cannot comprehend the theory of gravity.  Knowledge is the human mind's attempt to understand these forces that shape our universe.  Are we on the right track?  Maybe.  Maybe we've figured out some of the small stuff.  But the true way the universe works is something that we cannot even begin to comprehend.

Why did mankind's ancestors gather together and form society?  Because a society is an advantage that means survival for a greater number of people.  An adaptation if you will.  As I've stated before humans are an advanced and unique animal who are subject to the same principles and forces that other animals are.  Many species live in communities to further chances of survival.  Other animals have adapted to use their environment to their advantage.  For example, beavers have learned to chop down trees and use them.  Humans have combined these adaptations to form society.

But in this day and age, things have changed.  We have grown too big too fast.  We have realized that the effects of our society can impact the environment in unprecedented ways.  We are overpopulated.  If we continue as we have, nature will bite back.  She has defense mechanisms in order to reduce species like us who have gotten out of control.  She will wipe herself, and then nature will take its course.  Hell, there might even be humans again in a couple of million years.

But back to my point.  We formed society because it gave an advantage.  This is not quite true today.  For many different groups across the world, society bestows upon them a massive disadvantage,  whether it be race, gender, creed, class, sexuality, etc.  Society and humanity itself is out of wack with our natural balance.  This is causing all the hatred, conflict, war, and other ills in this day and age.  This massive corporate culture, the bastard child of capitalism, has rotted the world.  Maybe this economic meltdown is a good thing.  Wake us up to the fact that we can no longer live so out of touch with reality.

Why are we over populated?

There are vast tracts of undeveloped land and plenty of resources.

The problem as I see it is that there is way too much focus on gathering wealth and suppressing other people. It's a natural instinct most all men have.

In that hunter gatherer life you mentioned if one group of interlopers came onto another tribes hunting ground chances are a war party would be dispatched to kill the outsiders, just in case.

Today we have the same deal, but it is manifested in corporate war machines, controlled economic collapse and the quiet assault on the rule of law.

Which is why, in the end, those in power now must be dealt with a modern version of an atlatl dart.

I tend to disagree with this.  Like it or not, we are part of an ecosystem.  Just because there is a place on which we haven't built doesn't mean that destroying that land to build for humans will not have an impact that will come back and bite us in the ass.  The natural resources of the ocean, the single largest source of food and oxygen in the world, is starting to feel the strain of human resource gathering and destruction.

Mark my words.  The next round of global wars won't be over who controls the sources of oil, but who controls the resources of potable water.

Some say there is ten times the amount of water under the mantel than there is in all the oceans.
Extract it.
Build aquaducts. Farm fish. Create new materials.

There is only a few reasons why the Earth cannot support 20 billion people or more; greed, paranoia and nationalist zeal are a few that come to my mind.

I sort of wish that we knew a asteroid was going to destroy our planet in one hundred years; only then would we unite as a species and see an end to war. We have to get off this planet or we are all doomed.

Why would we WANT to support 20bn?
For species survival purposes we don't really need more than 1bn, probably only 1m.

When did life become solely about species survival?

Got any references for the under the mantle idea? I need a laugh.

There are plenty of reasons our life right now is unsustainable.

The earth is not overpopulated.
We humans are VERY inefficient with our resources, but if we boosted efficiency we could easily support more people.

Ireland is underpopulated thankfully. We aren't due to return to our pre famine numbers until 2025 I think. A good old world wide famine is whats needed. We would obviously be exempt having already had our cull.

With the current resources we have available today we can sustain a global populace of 9 billion if we distribute them equally ... at least that is the consensus amongst those that research this kinda things ...

Vertical farming is one technique which can help mitigate the effects of high populations - picture 20+ storey greenhouses growing food in the middle of cities and you get the idea...and there are other benefits to it besides not using so much land - production is close to the place of consumption, less fuel spent transporting it, manageable year-round supply of formerly seasonal food.

Not to mention you can grow vertically at home.  Make up a good wooden rack and train pumpkin vines to grow up it, have hanging planters with herbs and shit everywhere, you can even grow tomatoes upside down without too much effort.
