What's the point, the real way to go forward in terms of electricity/energy saving would be to get some proper Wind/Solar/Nuclear power plants and not shitty Oil/Coal/Gas plants.

Nuclear is the ONLY way forward for energy production in the west. Supplemented hopefully by renewable sources - otherwise we won't develop them further.

Cold Fusion, hurry the fuck up.

The amusing thing is that this is a pointless failure that won't change anything at all. Even if this was a pointless success and everyone participated, it'd damage the electrical grids and create a whole lot more emissions in the repairs and manufacturing of new equipment. Hooray for idiots.

I was at a Rise Against concert last night. Besides being fucking they are also environmental activists and all that stuff. So of course, they talked about earth hour.

Yeah, sure one hour doesn't do that much. But it's not that. It's that 3 years ago here in Sydney "a bunch of people that could give a fuck about our earth decided to do something about it". And the idea spread. Just 3 years later 83 countries committed to earth hour. 1 billion people. Next year it will be more, and more the year after. With each country comes more awareness to the problems facing our planet..

See, that's where this fanciful idea goes wrong. Giving a fuck does not equal doing something about it. If you want to do something about, get involved in the politics. If you want to save 3 cents, turn your lights off for an hour.

I agree that action ought to be taken; however, this is the difference between camping with signs and laying in front of the tires.

I had an earth hour earlier this year when the grid overloaded because of the bushfires around the high-tension pylons.

So no, I didn't take part.

My prediction for tomorrow's news stories on this event:

  • Crime spree as thieves take advantage of Earth Hour Event
  • Dozens of women raped as Mayor of <city> turns off street lamps
  • (Late December) Mini-baby boom attributed to Earth Hour Event
  • Light Industry lobbies Congress to ban Earth Hour Event
