Though poverty is on the rise among all Americans, the authors of the study -- entitled Poverty in the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Community -- suggest that unique social and political aspects of LGB life play a role in contributing to higher rates of poverty in this community, including vulnerability to employment discrimination, inability to marry and higher numbers of uninsured.

Joking aside... might it have something to do with young homosexuals being thrown out of home by disapproving parents or hounded out of town by small-minded conservatives? It's kind of hard to stay on the right side of the tracks when you are a youngster living on the streets turning tricks to get money for food. Look at the homeless problem in San Francisco, how many young gay and lesbian Americans have escaped to San Francisco in search of some sort of tolerant Utopia only to find harsh reality?

...I know this is only one type of scenario but it is, anecdotally at least, a common story for many American small-town homosexuals and the same thing doesn't really apply to heterosexual demographics and so it could skew statistics. Just a theory.

Well the 2000 forums had a few questions that could determine if you were in a sex same relationship. Also the study crunched the numbers from 3 different reports and sources and came to this conclusion. So we're not going by census data alone here.
