Are Americans flunking science? A new national survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences and conducted by Harris Interactive® reveals that the U.S. public is unable to pass even a basic scientific literacy test!!! (doh... not surprised)

Over the past few months, the American government has allocated hundreds of billions of dollars for economic bailout plans. While this spending may provide a short-term solution to the country's economic woes, most analysts agree that the long-term solution must include a transition to a more knowledge-based economy, including a focus on science, which is now widely recognized as a major driver of innovation and industry.

Despite its importance to economic growth, environmental protection, and global health and energy issues, scientific literacy is currently low among American adults. According to the national survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences:

    *  Only 53% of adults know how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun.
    * Only 59% of adults know that the earliest humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time.(LOL )
    * Only 47% of adults can roughly approximate the percent of the Earth's surface that is covered with water.*
    * Only 21% of adults answered all three questions correctly.

Despite the fact that access to fresh water is likely to be one of the most pressing environmental issues over the coming years, less than 1% of U.S. adults know what percent of the planet's water is fresh (the correct answer is 3%). Nearly half didn't even hazard a guess.

You can't deny that the North is academically superior than the South.

If you can, I'd like to see some statistics to back it up.

1000 participants over 4 days hardly seems like a study with any respectable depth.

hmmm, seeing as I was born and raised in "the south," I take particular exception to your generalization.  It smacks of gross prejudice and sterotyping.  Detroit is up north, isn't it?  Should I  take it their education system is one of your shining examples?

What is the national functional illiteracy rate?
The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) done in the 1990's (and endorsed by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) of 2003) found a total of 21-23 percent - or 40-44 million - of the 191 million American adults functioning at the lowest literacy level.

What is the functional illiteracy rate in Michigan?
About 18 percent.

What is the functional illiteracy rate in Detroit?
47% of metro Detroiters are reportedly functional illiterate.

What is the unemployment rate in Detroit?
About 10.3%

What is the high school graduation rate in Detroit?
There is no accurate data reported but it hovers about 65 - 70%.

Did you know that nearly 13% of the adult population in North Texas cannot read or comprehend the sentence you are reading?

Literacy is a significant problem affecting the business climate and economy of our region. Low literacy levels cripple economic growth by limiting production capabilities and increasing operating costs. Whether it’s an employee who cannot read the safety warning label on heavy machinery or a worker unable to read his or her employee handbook, illiterate workers increase operating cost by forcing companies to spend extra funds — and time — on training and other development resources.

The North Texas Future Fund commissioned a “Literacy Survey” in 2007 that found 12.6% of the adult population in Dallas, Tarrant, Denton and Collin counties had difficulty reading a newspaper. The fund is a subsidiary of the North Texas Commission that raises money to identify and address critical issues in the education and development of a quality work force.

The literacy rates are alarming and aren’t limited to a specific marginalized group. For instance, 17.3% of high school graduates surveyed reported much or some difficulty reading labels on food items or medicines, and all groups responded with at least 19.5% saying they had difficulty dealing with government agencies, public companies, business and medical personnel.
...while not a shining example (I just grabbed Dallas because it started with a 'D' like Detroit), it shows statistics better than Detroit.  I think the issue is one more due to major population zones, rather than geographical placement in the nation.
You want to come up with some fun street interviews from NYC or LA?  Those pretty epic examples of your 'academic superioritry.'

Using Detroit to exemplify the North as a whole = fail.

And since when was LA North?

Oh, statistics?  Like this?
It is a list of the top 1300 High Schools from 2008.  The top 5 are ALL in the south.  The first NY school is about... 11.

Sure as hell isn't the south.  And your "example=fail" leads me to doubt if you are even worthy of debating.

Is using Detroit to represent the entire North any less offensive than your entire blanket statement about the south?

I one-up your link with this one.

Debatable whether you find California North or South, though.

I think you need to step back a bit and stop getting so butthurt. The simple fact is that the North is superior when it comes to education. You used one city to the define the North. I can define the south using the link I posted, various sources which show mostly southern states coming in last in IQ rankings (although I know FM loves to toss their credibility out the window).

Your example of colleges is erronious, due to the massive out-of-state attendace.  College students all over the nation often travel out of state to 'experience' life and to find 'the best' college.  I went out of state to go to college.  My mother moved states to get he PhD, then went to an entirely different state to teach at a different university.

And you think only people from the state that the high school is located in go to that school? No parent moved their child(ren) to that state so they could go to school there? Lol.

Basically "it's okay for me, but not for you".

You know, if you subsituted "white" for north, and "black" for south, you could use the exact same arguments almost word for word, but you would have 50 people calling to ban you, you know?

lol, we've got plenty of black people here. Hell, my town alone is diverse as hell. Whites are only barely the majority.

Mostly because of the University.

No wonder none of them ever win that "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" show. Looks like is should be a challenge to pass the second grade.

Either way, not surprising, the value of education is still catching on really. These numbers will rise.

You did win, but only after losing about twice as many people as we did.

Still, you're right.  In general, the Northeast does have better school systems than the South.  States in the Northeast do typically have a lot more money than the Southern states as well, which is probably part of why those systems are better.
