in germany, after every (attempted) gun rampage, the politicians, the media, half of the country want to ban so called "killer games" (fps) because

everytime they search the gunmans (always male teens or young male adults) computer afterwards, they find fps games and say these games

kinda make you kill people (or at least make it easier)

it makes me sick, they always say "oh, there you go, he played cs, that's the explanation"

i mean, come on, counter strike (or a fps in general) on a young male person's computer... you could also say "hey, he has a tooth brush" or "hey,

he has a tv", that's the explanation. i guess 90% of all young male persons have a fps on their pc

what about this killer games debate in your countries? is there s.th. comparable?

ban movies... ban magazines... ban games...ban guns... ban talking of shooting...   no personal accountability... that would be too easy...
I have played games that involved pretending to shoot people...(cowboys and indians running around the woods when when i was 6-12 years old... and video games for 30 years.... and i have only shot an killed 2 or 3 people in anger my whole life...so banning games is not the answer...

Well, I can't imagine why people would think video games might warp young peoples minds. Nope. Not at all.

"He had a toy potato gun when he was a kid. This explains everything!"

It's all a pathetic attempt to answer the question "why would a normal person do such a thing?" The answer to me is obvous: "Because they're not fucking normal" but the answer these types like to come to is always blaming media. I don't know quite why they like to take the blame from the people who do this crap but whatever.

I have to say though, if videogames do in fact increase the likelyhood of someone turning to this kind of violence how the fuck is Uwe Boll still alive?

Yep.

Just because the sticks get more complex, the base human instinct doesn't.

I grew up playing donkey kong.  One day I snapped and started throwing barrels at monkeys at the zoo, well actually the 55 gal. garbage barrels were really heavy so I just pushed them toward the monkey cage until a worker told me to knock it off.  It was a pretty scary scene there for awhile but years of counciling has made me gooder.

Here's why I think computer games cop a bad wrap when things like this happen:

You think the parents and former-friends of this latest dude (or anybody else who went on a school shooting spree) want to face up to the fact that they didn't realise something was wrong with him? That somewhere along the line the parents made a massive mistake in his upbringing as far as coping with reality, other people and emotions?

You think that ANYBODY wants to be associated with the reasons for him doing this?

They'd rather blame other things. So would I in their position. Violent games are not the cause, they may play a part in it, as would any other graphically violent media he's been exposed to without the proper context of right and wrong being made apparent. They are NOT the sole reason for it though. He didn't go on a rampage because he lost at a game. He went on a rampage because he felt alienated, isolated and spurned by society and lacked the internal fortitude/coping mechanisms/friends to deal with it. Just my 2 cents on the matter...

One of my first childhood toys (the ones I remember, I don't remember all of them) was a mini M16 replica, which made a rattatattatatta sort of sound when the trigger was pulled.

They cant say "he/she was mentally fucked up" and get away with it, so they blame it on something else.

meh, it is all part of the blame game.  Let no crisis go to waste huh?  I guess that applies to tragedies too.  You've got one group of people that wishes to be parents to those that they deem societal deviants.  A way they can control is through legislation.  I guess they figure if they take away FPSessessesses, kids will be forced to read or do math.

I don't think video games are to blame for violence but there is a link somewhere in there. Generally violent people tend to watch or play violent games.

Then we get people like Cho who we'll never understand.

We just have to accept that you can never really get inside someones head unless they let you in there.
