I got my brother's old pc here and I'm switching crap Win ME to XP as of his request. (one app he wants to use only works in xp/newer)

1.2GHz Athlon
Soltek lol board
512MB ram
300w
40GB IDE HDD
IDE DVD-RW

XP installation freezes on 'Starting windows' right before the licence agreement should pop up.... I have tried two HDDs, two dvd-rw drives and even burned new XP cd to make sure its not the disk. Also tried different IDE connectors on mobo and new IDE cable. Mobo shouldn't have any RAID feature on (probably doesn't even have such feature).

Any ideas? The XP I'm trying to install is 32bit XP Professional. I'll give the mobo closer look tomorrow and see if I can find out the model to find out if it does have RAID drivers...

I suspect RAM. Some setup files are loaded there. Also make sure the HDD isn't full.

Probably RAM or mobo.

Checked closely for bad caps on the mobo?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

memtest time
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

tried with another identical stick of ram... still freezes on the install, but now it booted from my old 98 SE backup HDD (didn't do that with the old ram). I'll check the caps on the mobo....

edit: just noticed the keyboard looses power when it freezes... weird...

as well as looking for dead caps and running memtest, check the PSU with a multimeter

Lol.

Seriously, build him a new computer, Panzer, You could run 5 instances of Crysis on yours, encode 10 1080p movies, run f@h on every core in your PC and it would STILL outrun your brothers.

Even if you spend 200 euros he'll notice the difference.

why the fuck am I telling you this? You know already....

But you're rich, make him something cheap and be a good brother

I know I could build him a 200€ rig and oc it about 90% and it would be really nice.... I'll need to talk about that to him... he got a free Lenovo X300 lappy (yes, the one that costs over 2000€) so its not that bad atm... this pc is scheisse tho... noisy fucker.

lol, I totally forgot about that guide.

EDIT: Oh and to freezer, who is making fun of my analog multimeter: fu. That thing is old, and doesn't work anymore... so next time I need a multimeter I'ma have to go buy me a digital one I guess.

I've had a digital multimeter since 1999. It's my first multimeter, still going strong

My analog one just randomly died, for no apparent reason.

I suspected the fuse, but the fuse doesn't look blown at all.

Meh, oh well. Gives me an excuse to get a digital one I guess.

Haha yeah only place I have used analog multimeters is my old school and even there was mostly digital.... I have no idea how old my multimeter is but its older than my K5-2 rig so its old...

Well it worked for a week, but now he has a new issue.

PC fails to post.... goddamnit... I'll pick up the pc tomorrow after some other stuff in city....

Round two begins... I had the post fail a few times and it didn't seem to have any solid fix or cause. It randomly fixed itself after anything as simple as changing monitor cable to different VGA connector to reseting CMOS and reconnecting all the crap. Even that didn't fix it always.

But not fixing itself this time...

edit: I ran 12 hours memtest without errors when I had the pc. So I doubt its the ram... time to check the mobo physically...

when the POST freezes, if you leave it for some time, or reset it, do you then, after a while, hear the HDD spin up?
