After reading this article about the trend toward segregation in American schools, I was left wondering, as a white family, what is expected of us?

Are we expected to purposely stick our kids in a school that is below poverty and below standards for teachers, even though I can clearly afford not to do this, just to keep the schools integrated? Does the fact that I do not want my kids going to a fucked up school full of trouble makers and dissent make me a racist? Does the fact that I want what is best for my kids and strive to make sure they have a good school in a good district with no gang violence and no drugs ( comparatively speaking) make me a racist and a villain?

Now, multiply my attitude by a million and you will see why there is an increase in segregation. Are we bad people for not wanting to expose our kids to the bullshit that is inherent with schools such as been described in this article? These are the same reasons for "white flight" all over the country, in mass transit and in real estate. Does it make us racist because we want what is best for OUR families and can afford NOT to have to deal with inner city bullshit.

No, it doesn't make you racist or a villain.

Wanting a just, integrated society is one thing, not at the expense of your own kids though.

They did something similar here.
The created league tables. Naming and shaming bad schools. Extra resources would be aimed at these schools. If the schools didn't improve parents could see it in the tables and enroll their kids somewhere else and the School would eventually shut down. Capitalism for Schools.

It has been a total failure.

At the end of the day as a parent, the good of your child comes before everything else. And every parent should have the right to send their kids to a good school. Its unfortunate that bad schools are always in bad areas. Areas with high unemployment and crime. The kids are raised by bad parents and bring their bad upbringing into schools and fuck them up for everyone else.

My sister was teaching in what was named as the worst school in Ireland, in Belfast (been since bulldozed) No amount of good schooling can counteract bad parenting.
Example. She had a group away on a residential for a week. She said after 4 days she had got through to the worst pupils, even the UDA commander's Son (who basically ruled the school) They where happy, talkative and enthusiastic by the end of the week.
Then on Monday morning after being home all weekend, they where back to backward normal ways.
In an ideal world schools would be an island of normality to kids in deprived areas. But it won't happen, the parents need to be tackled first. They pass on their aspirationless outlook on life onto the next generation and they on to the next.

Yes, it does.

You are judging what you want for your family based upon a stereotype.

Although I am not necessarilly a proponent of private school, my wife and I have been saving for our son to go because of the fact they are bringing in inner city children from Hartford to our schools. I agree with you Lowing.

Totally agree. Kids arent inherently bad, they just get shit examples to follow. Fixing the parents would be a great solution, but damned if I know how that will happen. Hard to break the cycle of poverty/apathy/abuse etc.

I would put my children (if I were white and had children) into a mixed school.

School is half about actually learning from books and teachers and half about learning to interact and cooperate with other people. As far as learning to cooperate with a wider range of people mixed schools are great.

Also if your worried about drug use, private schools are much worse when it comes to drugs. Of the private highschool and public highschool that was in my area when growing up, the private school had a much higher drug rate. The private school kids had more money to actually buy drugs from the people who were there on sports scholarships. In the public school drug use wasn't all that bad.

If you trust your children and are a good parent you will be able to prevent your kids from using drugs (to a point) and actually have them do good in school.

Putting the richer kids into lower schools isn't the solution. It should be helping the less fortunate into a better school that should be the priority of the govt.

If you re-read I said "comparatively speaking". and yeah, COMPARATIVELY SPEAKING, I am sorry, but there is more gang violence and drugs in a majority black and Hispanic public school system.

Now having said that, even middle class and upper middle class black families do not want their kids in these school systems either, so what does that make them if it makes me a racist and a bigot?  Ooops.

As a matter of fact, Obama has his kids going to private school, and I bet they never went to an inner city school before his political career. Guess he hates black people to huh?

The reality is, putting these kids in a better school will do nothing but drag that better school down, as people that are able to do so, move out.

No, that's bullshit. Your now assuming that these kids are going to drag down a better off school simple because they come from lower backgrounds through no fault of their own.

Now your drifting towards the realms of racism.

Choosing the school to send your kids to based on the 'performance' of the school is fine.

Choosing the school to send your kids to based on the ethnic mix of its pupils is not.

We're not talking about neighbourhoods. We are talking about schools lowing. Helping those who come from a less economic background into a better school based on ability and not simply daddy's pay cheque isn't going to equate in street gangs roaming the streets setting fire to parked cars at night.

But go ahead and think that way, if you take your kids out of a school because there's a black minority within it, you might just deny your children to know how to develop and interact with a minority when they join the workforce and experience the real world.

Shouldn't this be a " get rid of the Public School system " thread.  The government fucks everything up, reguardless of race or economic status.

And race doesn't matter, ghetto is ghetto.  White, black, or yellow; the ghetto sucks.
