This bike shop is about 10 minutes from my house. This guy is very inspirational and a true hero, not necessarily for just serving his nation, but for his positive attitude and I am sure he will inspire others to do good. Tomorrow I am going to take my mountain bike in for a tune up and offer him some tools that I have extras of laying around in my shed. He may or may not need them but from one vet to another he should know he is supported.

Nice of that manager to hire him.

How does getting shot make you a hero?

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It is inspiring. He's a hero because he isn't bitching and sitting on his ass with his hand out.

Jesus, do you need charts and graphs?

apparently I do.

Risking your life to save drowning children makes you a hero. Wanting to have a job to make a living makes you a normal person. No?

Well then seeing as you aren't a normal person, I'll help you out by putting a bullet through your brain. Then you can go live like a normal person without eyesight.

Some people might like to state being shot in the head while standing around doing nothing doesn't constitute heroism.  After all it might been a friendly fire incident.

It is debate after all.

You make a rather reachy assumption there.
Prove it was blue on blue, lulz.  " Doing nothing..." lulz. Might have been. ( insert rolling eyes smiley here )

If he was doing something truly heroic at the moment (i.e. saving the life of someone else) I'm sure the article would have mentioned it

Well all i have to go on is 'active duty' whatever the hell that means, could be a whole raft of shit couldn't it?  The guy didn't save children from a machete wielding schizo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Potts) or stop terrorists blowing the shit out of Glasgow airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Smeaton_(baggage_handler) he was shot while doing his job.  He hasn't done anything outside the boundries of what would have been expected from him.  Unfortunate, Yes. kudos for getting on with his life....hero...hmmmmmm.....

I think it's inspirational the way he has rebuilt his life after Iraq and the injuries sustained there...

As for the 'heroism' argument, I guess it's a matter of semantics. I'd call it inspirational and an example of good living, a hype-happy newspaper/online source would call it heroism. I guess everyone has their own idea of what constitutes an 'heroic' act; the earlier example of diving into a pond to save a life is textbook heroism to one, and reckless stupidity to another. Either way I don't think anyone can really speak negatively of the article content itself.

I haven't said a negative word about the guy in the article.  Frankly i couldn't care less if the guy in the article is perceived as a hero.  The right to civilly question the ''heroism' should still be able to exist.

Yeah I think so too, but just remember who you're talking to and don't be surprised or argumentative about the response you receive...

Just to put more wood on the fire: I wonder, if an Iraqi who fought in their armed services for what he genuinely believed in, was then seriously wounded in combat and later got a job and started to get on with his life... how would he be classed? Hero, or an ordinary guy doing what he's gotta do to get back into working life? This hypothetical is, of course, ignoring all of the 'they're the enemy' and other black/white classifications of the war; I don't think the young men fighting on either side in infantry positions are inherently valorous or evil depending on their faction.

Implying that they guy may have been shot by a buddy or the other things you said are in fact negative.

I will support your right to question and debate to the bitter end. But a spades and spade.

The article is extremely vague regarding the circumstances of the incident.  Active duty.  Seriously wtf is that? Shot while on patrol, blue on blue incident, or messing about with his own gun? I don't know.  I don't see how it could be perceived as negative? I could sit here and think of a few more scenarios how it could have happened.  Does it matter?  Nope.

The fact remains, you got arsey because max questioned why you perceived this as heroism when others would not perceive it as such.  You know the bigger picture.

groan.

Consider it from just a human level.

The guy can't fucking see and he is assembling bikes. I consider that to be a ( somewhat low level admittedly ) heroic thing.

Maybe he was handing out toys to Afghan mothers in burkas when he was shot.

Maybe he was standing there with his junk in his hand working up a load.

Either way, there are able bodies fuckwits sitting on their asses.

No matter how you look at it, the story is inspiring.
