Obviously those guys represent the whole of Europe.

Two wrongs (in this case, sweeping generalizations about the US and about Europe) don't make a right...

We are enlightened and progressive, the USA is a cesspool inhabited by barely evolved monkies. So is Europe.

One Austrian reporter, does not equal Europe.

And when Obama visited Germany, I don't think he was met with burning pitchforks...

One Austrian journalist doesn't represent Europe, and he's been slapped down already - as you will have seen in the article.
'Dumb bloke makes racist comment and is roundly condemned by his employer and his peers'

Is your point that there are very few racists in Europe and the few there are have their platforms pulled out from under them very quickly?
If so then good work!

Silvio Berlusconi made a joke, probably in reference to his own permatan (you know some people can laugh at themselves)  the current incarnation of the Nazi party isn't too happy, and a newspaper published a cartoon indicating how much progress black americans have made.

Is that all you've got? Try harder FEOS.

Its hardly on a par with having widespread and open mandatory racial segregation within living memory.
How long ago were rednecks stringing up negroes for a laugh?

Now shut the fuck up yourself.

The Spiegel Online site reported that the Austrian journalist was "Slammed For Racist Obama Rant"

The Washington post says A Polish lawmaker stood up in Parliament and called the election result "the end of the white man's civilization."

A. Just one.

It also reports that
"One of the milder gaffes came from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. On Thursday, during a visit to Moscow, he praised Obama for being "young, handsome and even suntanned."
So the lawmakers who feels racist sentiment, are either mavericks (lol), or simply making gaffes.

Oh, and as for Berlusconi's comment?

Washington Post wrote:

Berlusconi's remark caused a stir in Italy, as critics chided him for sounding like a fool. But the prime minister was unrepentant. "What's the problem? It was a compliment," he told journalists the next day. Anyone who did not get the joke, he added, was an "imbecile."
The only one that comes close to Political, was

Washington Post wrote:

In Poland, the lower house of Parliament heard a similar interpretation of Obama's election from Artur Górski, a legislator from the Law and Justice party.

In a speech Wednesday, Górski called Obama "the black messiah of the new Left" and a "crypto-communist" who would undoubtedly prove a "disaster." He added: "Al-Qaeda is rubbing their hands with glee that the new president wants peace, not war."

"This marks the end of the white man's civilization," he said. "America will soon pay a high price for this quirk of democracy."
And guess what? The Polish government and Górski's party later apologized for the outburst. Górski did, too, but said his remarks were not racist, just "political."

So tell me, how this comes anywhere near to sentiment in Europe. You'll find fringe lunatics anywhere, thinking they are a voice of reason and that of majority and consent is just as crazy and ignorant.

Wouldn't one consider gaffes such as that derived from subconscious racism?

Newsflash for FEOS, racism hasn't been 100% eradicated anywhere on Earth.

Look at the reactions to any of these incidents, they are all met with anger, shock and outrage and quickly lead to apologies and groveling. That's wat shows you the opinion of the vast majority.

Of course not.  The only part of a pitchfork that can burn is the handle, so if someone wanted to greet Obama with a burning pitchfork, they'd have no way to bring it with them.

No shit you guys aren't backwards anymore the reason everyone kept calling you guys backwards is because you were being run be religious neocon nutjobs who really were backwards, and only could've gotten into the government because you guys were backwards enough to vote them in, things have changed now. I don't think you'll be seeing anyone say the US is backwards anymore. Except maybe the Irish brothers on this forum

Also Europe will always be a more racist place than the Americas.

I'd also like to say, the US may not be a backwards country anymore, but FEOS, you still are.

I see...so you guys don't like it when the entirety of Europe (or any individual country in Europe) gets painted with a single broad brush based on the comments or actions of certain representatives...even when those representatives are elected officials, voted in by your enlightened selves?

Welcome to the pool. The water's warm.

Apparently, the subtlety of the OP is lost on many of you in your attempt to defend yourselves. Understandable.

I don't for one second think that Europe is full of a bunch of racists. I fully realize that various European countries have their own internal issues they are still struggling with. And believe me when I say that I know for a fact that elected officials' comments (and at times policies) do not reflect on the population as a whole.

Some prominent European personalities made some stupid comments. And you felt that labeling all of Europe based on those comments was wrong. It happens all the time here, just rarely to euros.

As compared to some of your whoppers?

I doubt it.

But then again, I wouldn't expect you to understand the point here. Like if you read the post RIGHT ABOVE YOURS, for instance.

I think FEOS that you think that we tar all Americans with the Neocon-brush. That is just simply not true in my case anyway. It would be an incredible generalisation to comment on 300m people as if they were one entity, much in the same way as it is ludicrous to comment on 1.3 billion Muslims as if the tiniest part is the whole.

I was taking the piss tbh as I don't think anybody should ever make generalisations.

It's stupid and a easy and lazy way to form perspectives requiring little thought or analysis. We all roundly condemn it, and yet we all partake in it, be it intentional or unintentional. One of those instincts that is hard to break.
