RIP to all those killed in WWI, shame that a good number of those I saw today didn't pause for the two minute silence at eleven.

Wat?

WW2 had well over 50 million or more and WW1 didn't manage over 10 million soldiers dead and another 20 missing.

Total number of humans who have died due to political/religious conflict/wars must be massive though.

What a waste.

ATG, your topic was about Americans. This topic is about WW1. Both are wrong, it's about well, everything really.

I thought the US were barely involved in WWI? I'm a bit hazy on WWI history.

I can't imagine rememberance of the armistice is such a big deal over there.

I like rememberance day. It's all very tasteful and respectful and proper.

In the US today (11/11) was expanded to remember ALL Verterans of the Armed Forces.  We no longer call it "Armistice Day or Remembrance Day" but it's now "Veteran's Day."

the US is viewed as a an "Associated Power"(not an official ally) for WW1. They first got involved when Germany tried to cut off supplies to Britain with sinking of the passenger ship the Lusitania in 1915. US troops didnt really start pouring into Europe until 1918.

So, they were essentially a supply lifeline, like in the early stages of WWII?

Not to detract from the sacrifices made by US troops in the closing stages of the war.

Tell them by Terry Mills.

Tell them I heard the call and answered I was young and full of life.
Tell them I left my home and family to help my comrades in the strife.
Tell them that I, and many like me, trained, and drilled, and marched foot sore.
Tell them that I stood beside the colours proud of the uniform I wore.
Tell them of how I went to battle in foreign lands and fields of mud.
Tell them how those bombs and bullets churned those fields into rivers of blood.
Tell them how I saw my Comrades, some were trembling others brave.
Tell them how my friends lay dieing many gone with no known grave.
Tell them I saw those ruined cities, bombed and burning smoking pyres.
Tell them how those mangled bodies quenched my soul of waring fires.
Tell them of Auschwitz and of Belsen filled with skeletons of men.
Tell them about the ghastly death camps and never let it happen again.
Tell them of how I, and many others. now older, crippled, blind & lame
Tell them how soon we were forgotten and ask them would they do the same?

Alright alright, I didn't realise.

Remember a soldier with a boil counts as a wounded casualty if hospitalised for it.

Just a day, another day beneath the Belgian sun
Past grave on grave, row on row until I see the name John Condon
carved in stone, with harp and crown, little crosses in the ground
and standing there, my silent prayer is for a boy who died a soldier
wee lad who'll not grow old. Heroes that don't come home
Here they lie in Belgian fields and Picardy

Just a recruit in soldier's boots. from Ireland's shores to here
this living hell. This Poelcapelle. Where young men fell like you, John Condon
and all around the harp and crown, the crosses in the ground
stand up in proof, the bitter truth, the waste of youth that lies forgotten
wee lad who'll not grow old. Heroes that don't come home
Here they lie in Belgian fields and Picardy

Now tell me John, before I go on. What did you come here for?
with Ireland's bold, your life untold, 14 years old - to die a soldier?
and all around the harp and crown and crosses in the ground
what caused was served? So undeserved!

Heroes that don't come home. Sing out for all their souls
here they lie in Belgian fields, and Picardy

Mary Dillon singing it, beautiful song!

The Germans sank a passenger ship Luzitania that had lots of Americans onboard and were killed. US declared war on Germany.

We co-opted Armistace Day into Veterans Day.  We use it to honor all veterans.
