The challenge is to find a technical solution to facilitate a live debate over the internet between two debaters, governed by a moderator and with some number of listeners while producing a recording which can be posted for later listening. The idea is not go over the top rather to find something free and uncomplicated yet functional. There is plenty of talent in Tech to come up with a lot of positive contributions.

The solution shall meet the following criteria ...

  • Voice technology to support a debate, this must ... Teamspeak
    • Allow a moderator to govern who can speak.
    • Allow for n number of listeners.
    • Allow for recording of the event.
  • A specific server to host said service.
  • A specific site to host the recording and format.
  • Instructions for participants in how to install what they need or participation and what to do to join.

... anything missing that you think should be here?

Theres a skype thing where a moderator could allow who to talk, that would stop people from yelling at each other.

TS admins can mute members, no?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I always thought they could, but I'm not sure at all. The last time I admined a TS server was in 2006

There's an ad-on for TS that allows the Server Admin to grant and revoke voice rights.

Two debaters which I listed, someone to "govern" who can speak...what exactly did I not understand?

Edit: If you're saying about how it says a "moderator" to govern, I thought he meant in general just a "moderator", not specifically a mod here.

Vent, you can "Globally Mute" someone, but I'm not sure if they're just muted for you or muted for everyone.

TS and vent I believe could work equally well. I have a vent server that can hold a max of 8 people and a TS server that can hold however many, both of which I have the administrative power on to set up appropriately. I should be able to set up an appropriate moderator account.

Naha!  It just came to me.  You can impliment specific channel atributes so that people cant jump in (the listeners), and the SA can give the two debaters these rights to talk, and as the Admin see's fit, he can revoke a specific persons rights so they cant say anything.

To do with channel commander n all that shit.

It ain't a tech debate, it's a D&ST debate. jsnipy is just looking for some help on the technical side of things as far as I know, not a debate between tech members..

Yeah this isn't an argument I though it would be fun to include everyone. Lets hash it out and agree.

How does the moderator know who can speak, with everyone being muted?

I think we should stick to a 1v1 with a moderator + muted audience, at least the first time around.

I agree. Makes the most sense. And then have intermissions where we/you let certain people speak/comment on what's happened and been said so far.

That comes from whatever rules are hashed out in D&ST (tbp). To speculate, each debater would have some sort of time limit. It would volley back forth in chunks of time.

I thought there was going to be a muted audience to begin with anyway, otherwise there'd be waay too many people speaking at one time! Perhaps #bf2s IRC can be of help so that all of the audience can express their views but everyone is still just listening to the debaters. And then we can perhaps have questions taken from people, and then give them permissions in the teamspeak channel? Certainly for IRC there are muting facilities in that only voiced members can speak and operators can demote or promote them to this level. (voice simply being able to speak when other members can't, not actual 'voice')

Perhaps a list of a few people then, but at the start I think it would be better to keep the list short, and it should be figured out ahead of time. At least for the first round.

Kyle teamspeak has a chat function at the bottom, and I think the fact that it is harder to use would make it better than IRC. Helps cut down on spam to some degree, forces people to mean what they type a little bit more. I think it would be better suited in this situation.

what?

I'm serious, because it's more clumsy would force people to mean what they say more. Can't just throw your hands at the keyboard and hit enter.

Yes TS would be perfect for this.  You can record and admin can grant voice rights to specific people.  And I like the idea of a more clumsy chat interface.
