WEATHERFORD, Texas  —  A man was sentenced to more than 4,000 years in prison Wednesday for sexually assaulting three teenage girls over two years.

A day after finding James Kevin Pope guilty, jurors sentenced him to 40 life prison terms — one for each sex assault conviction — and 20 years for each of the three sexual performance of a child convictions.

At the request of prosecutors, state District Judge Graham Quisenberry ordered Pope to serve the sentences consecutively, adding up to 4,060 years. He will be eligible for parole in the year 3209, according to the Parker County District Attorney's Office.

"We believe it was a just result," prosecutor Robert DuBoise said, adding that he was "overwhelmed" with the judge's decision to stack the sentences.

Pope, 43, abused the girls for nearly two years. It came to authorities' attention earlier this year after Pope made several inappropriate comments to a friend, who notified Child Protective Services.

During the trial, the teens testified about the abuse, and their sexually explicit photographs were shown as evidence.

But Rick Alley, Pope's defense lawyer, told jurors in closing arguments that the victims were incapable of understanding what happened, the Weatherford Democrat reported in its Wednesday online edition.

"If it was as traumatic as they indicate, they would be able to give you (specific dates and times of the incidents). Simply because it's shocking doesn't make it true," Alley said.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, a U.S. Secret Service agent testified that while examining Pope's home computer, he found more than 200 images of child porn.

Later Wednesday, some jurors said the case was difficult because of the subject matter.

"We were careful not to make any mistakes in viewing and evaluating the evidence," said juror Dale Lewis.

Anyone proven guilty via dna and sentenced to more years than they are expected to live should be executed.

Its kind of stupid. Why give him such a ridiculously long sentence. I understand that they don't want him out of prison, but giving him something like 80 years would have been enough to keep him there indefinitely. When a sentence like 4060 years comes out, it makes the judicial system look childish.

The reason they stack it is so that it's harder to get years removed.

Exactly.  They should have just said it was life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Oh yea! This guy made it today!

Ya know I kinda agree with you, reluctantly. I wish that he was put to death. Any and all "lifers" should be, I dont want my sales taxes keeping this guy alive for the next 80 years. I want structurally sound bridges. I want highly qualified teachers educating my kid. I want public utilities to be reliable, etc.

The thing Im happy about is that we have laws. If they are broken, they have consequences. The victims and their families didnt get justice by this guy getting put on probation and free to to it again in 3 years. He got sentenced with no slap on the hand, rather everything that he earned. Good Game jurists and Judge. Not childish at all... vigilante.

I'm not exactly sure why it is, likely the appeals process, but it costs more money to execute them than to hold them.  Then again, there is one thing that is pretty universal.  Even the worst of the worst in prisons don't like child molesters.  The guys on the inside may take care of it.

We in England can learn a thing or 2 with the sentences America dishes out, here you can kill and not sent to jail, get 4 years for "manslaughter" but only serve half for "good behaviour" etc

It takes forever for people, even if they're 110% guilty to actually get executed.

Anyway, I should become a judge and be the first to give someone a sentence of over 9,000 years.

Not here in Texas.  We not only have the death penalty, we have an express lane for those who have given up appeals or had final appeals turned down.

However, sexual abuse of a child is not a capital offense.  It should be, but it isn't.  They never want the man to breathe free air again, so they have to sentance him to longer than he can possibly live.  With the way the parole system works around here, that is about as secure as they can make it.

That being said, I think the actual sentance of thousands of years is made to help the victims and their families feel justice was truely done.

And actually, this year the US Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty for child molesters is not allowed....at least by the legal system, that is.

okay, it is not allowed.  It SHOULD be, though.  Public hangings; I am old-school.
