I bought a new monitor today, viewsonic VX924, to replace my old 17" CRT. I used the DVI input and everything looked good until I tried running BF2. resolution changes a couple of times, but doesn't display anything and eventually returns me to the XP desktop.
I tried running another EA game, Command & Conquer, and an error message came up saying "Please make sure you have DirectX 8.1 or higher Installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements." Both games worked fine before changing the monitor.

I reinstalled DirectX 9.0c and the latest Forceware drivers for the 6600GT video card, and all worked great.  I had the old monitor connected as well, and I started playing with the dual display options. When I went to run the games again, neither worked. I removed the CRT monitor, reinstalled DirectX and the Forceware drivers (many times) and nothing seems to work.

Anyone with any ideas might turn a bad night for me into a bad night for some other BF2 player.

Thanks for looking.

There is more to consider than just the resolution.
You need to make sure that the refresh rate you choose in the game does not exceed that which the monitor can handle.  Check the documentation that came with your monitor to determine the appropriate refresh rates for the resolution you desire to use.

You're LCD needs to be running the correct resolution and frequency - usually 1280x1024 and 60Hz. If you try running a resolution beyond your LCD's native, it will kick you out. If you try running a resolution below your native, it will be interpolating and won't look nice. If you try running the wrong frequency is will look bad/kick you out.

Kudos to 1.12 adding 1280x1024 support instead of 1280x960 prior to 1.12

You're games have already been configured for a resolution/frequency on your old monitor I assume, and probalby beyond your LCD's native, so you need to edit the config files for the games to play on your new monitor.

Thanks for the responses.

I was previously running at 1024X768 @ 85hz. While I had both old monitors running, I did get the game to work, and I changed the resolution to 1280X1024 @ 75hz. I then played for 10 minutes or so. After leaving that game I tinkered some more (sound death knell here) and both games stopped working. I fiddled for another hour or two, gave up, and reinstalled windows. There is no length I won't go to for BF2. All seems ok now.

Thanks again for listening.

Anytime man.
You may also want to run RivaTuner. (www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/)
Will help tweak some things with your 6600 and the new lcd.

You will want to set the gamma/color again as well, as the lcd will be a good bit different from your CRTs.

Thanks guys. I played around in the Battlefield 2 folder in My Documents. I changed the resolution setting from 1280X1024@85 down to 1280X1024@60. Didn't work, so I got aggressive and deleted the entire Battlefield 2 directory and that worked. Must be some little setting in there that was screwing it up.

All is good now
