BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A masked gunman died Monday after storming a high school in a northwest German town and wounding several people, German police officials said.
It was not immediately clear how the man died, Klaus Laackmann told CNN.
N-tv television reported the assailant was an 18-year-old former student of the school, The Associated Press said.
Police secure the area around the school in Emsdetten.
Laackmann said the school, located in Emsdetten near the city of Muenster, has now been evacuated. Police are searching the school, he added.
Students at the school were between the ages of 10 and 16, Laackmann said.
The man entered the school at about 9:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) and began firing shots, Laackmann said, adding that the man was also carrying explosives.
Police spokesman Josef Brinker said several students were among the wounded, as well as a female teacher and the head caretaker, AP reported.
Their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
