some situations.

Would you like to see a stronger police presence, to protect us from the crimal element and people skating by our system?

Getting scared about the potental police state that we might be living in currently?

Or think it's perfect the way it is, and sometime things happen but give them a break it's a hard job, and not all cops are dicks so it's ok for cops to go off the cuff sometimes....

Well make your decision and discuss I want to see pro's and cons on this issue. I've seen alot of people defending IMO over use of force on people.

I will post my feelings on this later as not to sway anyone's decision one way or the other.

The world is a different place than it was 50 years ago. We've got kids shooting up their schools and people getting mugged over a video game console. More police = safer society.

Damn it, I voted wrong by accidnet.

I hate that.

Fancey when is enough enough? Did you see IRobot, is everyone living at home and playing on the internet really going to save the human race? And it's not very different then it was 50 years ago, the only thing that has changed is that there are more laws making more people criminals.

At Parker, that really reminds me of the movie Temorrs"

I don't think more or less cops improves crime rates but rather the training and behavior are what matters.  Keep in mind there's legal loop holes, beurocracy(?), and other things that inhibit policed duties.  And of course we can't understimate the power of the MSM to make cops look good or bad and seal their fate..or exonerate them.

I've read through the comments of the threads the OP is referencing, and it's easy to see how we all form judgments based on limited facts and testimonies.  After a murder trial i participated in recently, I learned to evaluate MSM crime reports more properly hopefully avoiding unfair judgment.

I don't see how I,Robot has any relevance to this. Anyway, the world is vastly different than it was 50 years ago. It has nothing to do with more laws making more people criminals. Are you suggesting that 50 years ago, a kid shooting up his school wouldn't be considered a crime? The amount and nature of the crimes now are horrific compared to society 50 years ago.

OK so first sorry for hitting the extra e in your name.

But second so what has changed so much in society that has made these horrific criminal acts? I'm was going to try to find if school shootings were common back a ways, but I'm sure that there has always been horrible crimes. It just feels like it's much more recently because the technology and the news have brought all these acts to our front door..

I agree with Fancy in that our society has changed much over the lifetime of this country.  There are definitely more heinous crimes than there were before.  I do not necessarily agree that a larger police presence will deter criminals.  I would support a shift in policies from trying to deter all crimes to more of a focus on violent crimes.  Also, maybe look into reasons these violent crimes are happening.  I think we need to understand why there are people who go "postal" as a society, and maybe we might be a little better off.

Our society is definitely different than it was 50 years ago.  I believe we need a strong police presence, but like ironchef said, it's the quality of police training/intelligence level of the officers that is more important.  I think we should pay cops more, honestly.  You're not going to get the best and the brightest interested in a job that they might get killed in the course of for $24,000 a year.

I don't really think more police but more effective ones. I am not saying give all policemen G36 assualt rifles but have them train better and reinstate the hight requirement.

Despite my beliefs in this country's potential downfall as becoming a police state, to be honest, most of the crime going on in America happens in neighborhoods 90% or more of the people here don't live in.

The fact of the matter is this: violence can happen faster than police response time, even if there's one in every store and on every corner.

LOL...  good call...  but yeah, I voted yes.

The reason why I think we need more police is because the War on Iraq has shown us what happens when a significant portion of our law enforcement is called to duty overseas.  A lot of police are also in the military reserves.  A lot of cities in the Midwest have seen a recent increase in violent crime due to the shorthanded police departments in places like Minneapolis.

So yeah, more cops do equal less crime, unless you live in L.A. or New Orleans.

Turquoise actually brought up a very valid point in this matter.. But when they come back in an other 20-25 years are we going to have twice the police force?

Also how have things changed so drastically in the past 50 years? Crime is still were it was in those days and age.  It was probably even worse back then, so how has it changed?

Seems to be fine in Finland. Never felt unsafe here nor have I ever been robbed.
And I do leave the safety of my house every once in a while
