''By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself,''

lol irony.

Anyway, I won't make judgements on whether or not the gaurds were justified or intelligent, but they did show a good amount of discretion, their first resort was talking; they checked policy; and they neglected to apply force until the child had proved himself capable of injuring a human being. At worst I think they only deserve a reprimand.

Could be. Depends on the current. 50000 volts is plenty to kill you. 1000 volts is plenty to kill you.

I think using a taser on a 6 year old is just silly. If it had been me I'd have just taken the glass off him and given him a slap (which I'd probably have got in more trouble for than for tasering him).

I think people are forgetting just how small and ineffectual 6 year old kids are. They are weak and badly coordinated and no threat to anyone with any sort of weapon short of a firearm. Unless he was some sort of mutant super kid (which since they won't release any details on his size, maybe he was), in which case I'd have stayed well clear.
I have no opions for stupid people like this.
Do you mean options, opinions or onions?

A six year old is at massive risk of death from a taser.  He makes a cry for help, police risk killing him to stop him hurting him self... yeah, makes real sense...

Anyway this was 2 years ago, I'm suprised that by now they haven't tried out their tasers on a 3 year old for waving a rattle in a threatening manner...

"Then the boy began waving the piece of glass around, holding a security guard at bay."

A 6-year old can do that. Must be a pretty big kid.

This was a lose/lose situation for the police.  They look bad for using a taser on a kid, but they would look just as bad if they used physical force on the kid.  As an aside, what would you expect them to do if it was an adult waving a sharp object?  What if they let the kid cut himself (as someone suggested) and the kid bleeds out?  I think the police made the right call here.  I mean really, what would make a six-year-old want to cut themselves?

Perhaps we should wait and see what the professionals find with the kid before passing judgment on the police.

See the problem with this is that the cops are fucked either way. If they tried to grab the kid and he'd cut himself the same people who are admonishing them now would be complaining that they had less-lethal alternatives to use that would have subdued him.

Heres a hint people, sometimes in a bad situation you have to use the least bad solution. Not the ideal, not the best possible that you can imagine, The LEAST BAD. The situation was fucked up from the start, the cops restored order the best way they could with NO Casualties.

There is no black and white touchy-feely way to deal with a 6y.o. who is threatening to cut himself up. the tazer prevented the kid being seriously hurt or killed and protected the bystanders.

I despair at the cotton wool some of you have wrapped yourselves in. WAKE THE FUCK UP! You dont live in a care-bear world. Deal with it.

After cooling off from seeing the press measure current by 'voltage,' I would like to point out that with as many lawsuits being filed against law enforcement as there are, why is anybody surprised that their response times aren't exactly stellar? Much safer to arrive after the fact and do the paperwork.
