Dang, and I registered after lurking to say exactly what the guy above said 1 minute before me, LOL. Hitler sprung forth into public existence on a ticket of Christian hate and nationalism that makes Rove and the Shrub look like amateurs. You could release "Mein Kampf" translated to English, replace any German place names with American ones, and put Ann Coulter's name on it as author and nobody would even blink (oh, like she's never plagiarized before...).
For the sake of arguement though, you do have your "atheist" mass-murderers, you got Stalin and Mao murdering millions by various means who were decidedly virulently anti-religious, extremely (and ironically) anti-semetic in Stalin's case and anti-Buddhist in Mao's case. However, I'd go a step more and say that religious (even anti-religious) beliefs were still one of the root causes of violence. Religious perserverence in a belief, where you narrowly define what is "right" and broadly define what is "wrong", even if God is not a part of it, is still extremely dangerous. I think it's called "extremism" and "fanaticism" for a reason.
Unfortunately, to be a moderate in an extreme world is a very tough position. The religious nutcases, ever the gullible audience of propoganda, would have you believe they're constantly under attack. They would have the Constitution, which keeps their right to be stupid intact, burned at the stake not realizing it is what protects EVERYONE in the US and like-minded countries. This is mixed with their Disney version of history that tells them that little brown guys all over the world should never have a reason to hate us...they must hate our freedoms. Did I cover all the talking points?
Extreme liberalism actually hasn't killed anyone that I know of. I'm still trying to figure out the hodgepodge of wildly different beliefs that make up "those damned liberals" and what is the common thread. Near as I can figure, it's whatever the far right would have you believe is not "them" at the moment. So I ask a wingnut "What is the end game?", at what point would they declare themselves "winners". When gays are all rounded up and executed? When everyone has been converted to Christianity at gunpoint or face the gas chamber? When every sperm and egg are carefully preserved because they carry potential for life? When our society is segregated and sterilized between races and socio-economic classes? When people no longer speak out and simply trust their singular-minded leadership to make all their decisions for them? What is the end game?
Sorry for getting off topic, I'm actually a social libertarian, I just like to argue with extremists on both ends.
