I had never had this problem before 1.4. After upgrading to 1.4 the game would periodically crash to the desktop during online play. A couple of weeks ago it crashed to the desktop and then I restarted the program. After joining a server and arriving at the kit selection/spawn screen I noticed the mouse pointer is frozen. I have to bring up the task manager to close the program because esc won't work. It does that every time now and I can't figure it out.

System Manufacturer: MSI
System Model: MS-6702
BIOS: Version 07.00T
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+,  MMX,  3DNow, ~2.2GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 128mb of video ram (current catalyst drivers)
Creative Audigy 2 sound card.

check your controls.con file before u start BF2.
Is there anything in it?
This happened to me once, entire file was blank.  I couldn't use mouse, walk, jump...etc.  Escape didn't work either...no keys had been assigned to anything!
Luckily, I had backed up my controls.con file.  If you haven't, just copy over the file in Default folder, go from there.

Is this the controls.con file in my documents or battlefield 2\Profiles (where bf2 is located on your hard drive)

If you just deleted it upon running the game again a fresh default copy would be created.  For your future information.

I didnt want to create a new thread, but I'm having this problem too. I have been playing fine for months and months, yesterday BF2 crashed pretty hard, it just froze up and played an irritating sound - ctrl alt delete didnt work at all, I had to hard reboot. Since then my mouse always freezes now and its so irritating. I join a game and my mouse/keyboard are all of a sudden unresponsive. I checked the controls.con file and it looks fine. Any help please? I'm going to scan for viruses and if its clean (should be) I guess I'll reinstall....

Glad you got it fixed up, galvatronfletch.
turkeybacon, when you first start BF2, before joining a server check under "Options" to see what keys are assigned.  If it shows nothing, then exit BF2 and do the controls.con fix.
FYI it is located for me at My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002\Controls.con
If it's blank, copy the one at My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default\Controls.con

N.B. EVERYONE should make a backup copy of their Controls.con file, if you have tweaked BF2 at all, including adding a joystick.  If it gets mysteriously erased, its a pain in the *** to have to enter it all again.

Delete your entire BF2 folder in My Documents.  You'll have to reset your controlls but you'll be able to avoid a restart.

Thanks. If only I read this before I uninstalled everything !!

I uninstalled everything like a nub, saving my user profile etc..I repatched, started up again, checked my controls section --- nothing was there!! I guarantee this is what happened before I uninstalled (I did check my controls.con before this btw, it was not empty). Urghh how annoying. I did a "restore defaults" in the controls menu, then re-tweaked everything the way I like it -- I'm back in business. Its frustrating because I didnt even reinstalled SF, so now I need to do that (can I uninstalled patch 1.4? Or do I have to uninstall BF2 again?)

But anyways, all I had to do was restore default controls. Hell I just had to LOOK at my controls section under the Options menu. It was weird, my controls.con file looked fine though. Not that I can read it or anything, but it wasn't empty as this thread suggested it would be.

You know, I'm not sure whether to call it prophetic or ironic or maybe just coincidental.
But it happened to me again yesterday, third time ever.  I was just playing along, computer seemed to be struggling a bit, then all of a sudden black screen and horrible whine over the audio.
Click!  Hard power down, reboot.
Start up BF2 again.  Checked my Options before I joined a server...blank.  All controls gone, and server history gone.  Somehow it got zapped in the meltdown.
But it was easy fix this time, because I had backed up my Profile.  Logout, copy, paste, login, join game....verifying client data zzzzzzzzz

Thats how I think mine got screwed - BF2 crashed really hard, ctrl alt delete didnt work, I had to hard reboot. And after that, I guess my controls got wiped (even though my controls.con looked fine...)
