In BF2 (and the expansion), the game closes at random times. There's no error or anything - it just sends me back to the desktop. Sometimes, it stays in the "connecting to account server" screen for extra long, then the game closes by itself. When it *does* get past the "connecting to account server" screen, it usually crashes when I try to join a multiplayer game.

I had something similar happen to a different game a few months ago - the culprit was a particular joystick driver. I don't have any extra devices installed, that I'm aware of (I uninstalled the joystick drivers). Has anybody had similar problems or know of a solution?

yeah i have this problem - tho it's been happening a lot less since I uninstalled 'catalyst control center' (for Radeon vga), and snooze my AntiVirus while playing. It has still happened, just not nearly as often. Next step I'm gonna take personally is to upgrade from 1gb to 2gb of RAM.

What are your specs/

1g PC3200
GF6600
2.0 GHz AMD
onboard sound.

I have the MSI version of my video drivers. Maybe switching them to the standard NVidia ones will work.

New drivers did nothing. I did find a pattern though:

When I use the "+reset 1" option (to bypass the first few intro videos), it always gets past the "connecting to account server" screen and lets me play single player mode, but crashes when I try to join a mulitplayer server. When I don't use the "+reset 1" option, it always crashes when it's connecting to the account server. I've tried at least 10 times with the option and without, and every time it's done this.
