Overall a nice guide, but a fair amount of skill on the part of a pilot/gunner combo can throw most of it out.

Communication (both typed, verbal and just intuitive) is KEY to a good pilot gunner pairing. This is especially true when it comes to tv missles. I hate gunners who either sit in tv mode when they have good cannon shots, or in cannon when I'm lining up a tv shot (lining up is a relative term, as I don't just hover in place to set up a shot).  The best gunners I've had are those who realize that I'll give them 1-2 seconds with a slight lead on a moving target for them to make the shot. Thus when they see the target, they switch to tv missle mode and wait for the shot. I've lined up 15+ shots against helos and armor many times in just a single round when I have a good gunner. Most of my driver points come from the attack helos (a few in there from BH and armor), which shows that I've participated in almost as many driver kill assists in a helo than the combined kills of my piloting and gunning.

I make mistakes, but I'm glad I get to be one of the pilots complaining about bad gunners rather than an "elite gunner" who complains about my pilots. To all you guys out there who have had good gunning rounds, remember that a crap pilot will destroy your accuracy.

Yea, that tends to work pretty well if your reflex's are sharp enough. If you have some decent altitude, a barrel roll tends to work well also.

So true.  I need to find good pilots and play with them more often.  It's pretty damn risky when you go into a random server and you see that private/pfc waiting at the helipad.

On a random note..anyone know of any 24/7 karkand/sharqi/wake servers?

Very good input.  This was the intent behind the guide.  Keep the information coming.  Maybe more people will have the chance to read this post in it's entirety.  I might post it over on a few other forums as well.

If you guys want to team up with some really good chopper pilots, whether in BF2 or BFV, our clan is based off of the chopper.  We've been around for almost 2 years now, and going really strong.  We are recruiting right now, so if you're not in a clan, we'd love to have you.  Our requirements for recruits is posted on our homepage in the news section.  Give us a visit at http://bf2.mercpilots.net

Please. I play with another account when my friend plays, and he's a pretty good pilot. The other guy I play with is also good with the chopper. Their names are CAN3S (http://bf2s.com/player/46640943/) and doip(http://bf2s.com/player/45585467/). So shut up.

I consider myself to be a decent gunner (*yes, I have 2 accounts too before someone says something*) - what I hate is when the pilot takes it as a Rambo mission for himself and goes around from tree to tree taking stuff out with rockets...  Dude, give me a chance atleast - that's what I'm here for...

Great write-up dude - I look forward to the next edition.

Nice guide. This should be featured so all the loser pilots (myself included) get a chance to look at it.

My apologies for necro'ing this but I felt this should be included as well, taken from a post I made in another chopper thread, I just recently realized that the wiki for the chopper piloting guide had a thread here. My mistake! *Embarrassed face*

I'd like to add something if nobody objects, it's a piloting technique that I've not seen mentioned in the wiki guides for chopper piloting.

I apologize if this is common knowledge, but given my gaming experience in Battlefield 2, VERY few pilots know how to accurately use their own missiles!

Here's a huge tip to any aspiring chopper pilot. You see that horizontal line that shows your tilt? That's not all it's for. Play around with it and notice that it moves on a vertical axis as well. This is to show you where on the Y axis your missiles will end up. Use the target reticle to position the missiles, but use the bar protruding from it to judge where they're going based on the downward or upward tilt of your chopper. Now, moving horizontally, as any pilot who's used their missiles knows, throws all of this off kilter massively. The key is coming in straight at the target, slinging missiles in is a matter of pure luck if you're turning.

If this is what your reticle looks like

----------------       -----------------

                       0

Here is where you should end up landing your missiles.

----------------   X   -----------------

                       0

That diagram is about as crude as it gets, but due to CPU cooling issues I can't run BF2 right now to get screenshots .

Anyway, it's not a perfect science, but if you practice with it you open up a whole new dimension for your chopper squad. So many good pilots out there would be great pilots if they were better able to support their gunners with some extra firepower when the guns run hot or a TV guided missile misses its target. Rather than having to set up that shot again, you can finish the job in one pass.

Do you think it is better to use a joystick or keyboard for the Attack Heli?

Once the TV missile is launched, the gunner's perspective is now with the missile, not the chopper.  Feel free to locate the next target, dodge radar, or whatever your little heart desires.  Moving the chopper while the TV missile is in transit will not affect the gunner's perspective or aim on said target.
Can't believe this never occurred to me, excellent observation.

I feel keyboard is better since you can control 2 directions of motion at once. You can veer left on keyboard while turning the chopper slightly the opposite direction with your mouse...

Well guys, I took a LONG break from BF2, and came back about a month ago.  My skills in the chopper were quite rusty for the first few games, but I knocked the rust off fairly quickly.  I have found that in the Special Forces Expansion Pack maps, the choppers aren't as "hogged" as the regular BF2 maps are.  I've been spending all my time in SF.

I've also found that not enough people have read this thread, so I'm bumping it back for more views.  We need the chopper pilots to realize that their gunners are their firepower, not their backseat drivers.  Too many times in the past few weeks I've gunned for some good pilots who can handle the chopper quite well, but have no idea the kind of destruction they are missing because they want to show me how well they can navigate the chopper through the buildings.  Such a waste.

Anyway, good gaming to you all, and look me up anytime in SF.  I'm on almost every night.

I think that this guide should be featured, or at least stickied ...I'll see you on the field
maybe we should join up ,because I on the other hand is pretty good att keeping the heli stable but I cannot hit anything with the guns. When I'm a gunner the pilot usually kill "my" targets with the missiles after I've overheated the gun...

good job... i think everything in here is good except for one little thing.  When taking out ground aa's, it depends on if the pilot is lining u up for it or not, but tv can be an acceptable form of taking it out.  You of course have to be fast w/ changing to tv mode... but many times a tv will take out an aa target much faster than minigun... and its muuuch butter to use the tv if your at a good distance from the aa.

Hmm. I'm going to start a flame war, but define good gunner? I find good piloting so much harder than gunning which seems so much easier. When you pilot you think for two people when you gun you think for one. Its not hard to hit armor and the like with a TV which can me manipulated relatively easily, and the MEC cannon mows down just about anything.

One thing about 'good' gunners, 1. They spot constantly for the pilotl. This is a MUST have. It cannot be the other way around.
Agree Again

*edit: Ow and if u wondering why so less kills but yet so much choppertime thats because im a giver I am a true pilot i give my kills to the gunner, how its ment to be played BAAAAAAAAAH (H)

Does anybody use a Saitek joystick with "rudder control" on the throttle? I use the X45 (atleast I think that's what it's called ) and can control motion in 2 directions at once.
Anyone else got this joystick (or similar), but still consider keyboard to be the best option?

PS: Yes, still a n00b! So don't even worry about my helistats

Just use the damn mouse and keyboard setup that came with the game. It works just fine.

Nice read, some great tips and techniques.

Personally I prefer to hug the ground when I'm inflitrating enemy lines to steal their chopper CPs. I also like to fly low and fast, pop up, strike hard and then fade. But to each pilot their own styles I suppose.

Hunter/Killer FTW !
