But Rio is definately worse, and probably the least safe in the world (where there's no warfare going on).
Tha must be the most dangerous place I've been to too. Didn't really feel like getting out of the car before we were in a guarded garrage...
Last time I was in SP the local mafia was bombing busses

I haven't been to too dangerous places, since I don't want to risk my life just to see another country...

The thing about Cav's is they are the under classes. Their parents were drunks or lazy bastards, or beat them, or ignored them. The only way to get rid of them is to tackle social issues. And as the gap between rich and poor widens, I can only see the chav problem getting worse.

Johannesburg, South Africa.
Near Soweto the worlds biggest squatter/shanty town/township.

Not a nice place to be. It is the murder capital of the world, even beating all US cities.

Though are we talking about most dangerous places due to MILITARY or SOCIAL reasons.

If Military definately Fallujah in Iraq or places like Helmand in Afghanistan.

Lawless, reckless abandon.  And it's even worse in February during Carnaval.  Carnaval to the Cariocas (people of Rio) means that Christ (the big statue "cristo redentor") turns his back on the people for 4 days so they can purge themselves of their sins before repenting.  So other than samba dance-offs and parades of naked people, it's 4 days to do your "worst"..this goes for everyone..police, public officials, citizens, etc.  If killing is your thing, then you have a 4 day window..if rape and pillaging is your bag..then off you go for 4 days.  if jacking off on restaurant windows for 4 days is your thing, then happy yanking!  lol  I've seen it in São Paulo (2nd biggest city in the world) and neighboring cities, albeit tamed down compared to Rio, and it's nuts.  makes mardi gras look like a childs petting zoo.  In the northeast of brazil (salvador, Bahia, etc), it lasts 2 months.
Wtf???? Rio and São Paulo are dangerous cities, but what is this crap about "Christ turning his back on carnaval". Man, the ignorance of some Americans really piss me off...

And as long as we are talking about unsafe cities, I took a wrong exit once in Atlanta and ended up in a really "scary" place, to say the least. Fortunately, after a very long half-hour looking to get back to the highway, we found a police car and the cop told us how to find the highway again and warned us not too take too long getting out of there.

Pretty interesting...lots of folks been to the mideast and had the all to familiar "uneasy" feeling.  I too have to say that the mideast where I was, was the most unsafe place I'd been ('course, at the time, Iraq was lobbin' missles at us...missed every target however by a long shot ).

As far as US cities, for me personnally as far as where I've been, I'd have to say it was a toss up between St. Louis and Detroit...rough towns, boy.  Phoenix is getting pretty bad too...and I grew up there :S

Felt pretty safe in the big cities of Texas where I stayed for a while...many cowboys with guns and permits...not too many people willin' to fool around there

Maybe you should ask around then if you live there.  When I lived there, that's the story I got as an explanation of Carnaval.  Do you live in the state of Rio de Janeiro?  I heard this comparison both in Campinas, and in Niteroi.

You were in Panama? I was there a few times - had a Panamaniac gf. I think you mean Colón, not Christobal. It is THE NO.1 SHITHOLE in Latin America apparently. My gf wouldn't even let me go there!!

Jerusalem at the height of Intafada...at the Western Wall...when the youngsters were getting their sign-up ceremony for the IDF and there were literally hundreds of kids in uniform and hundreds of M16s on table waiting for them to complete their stuff...

Seeing Al-Aqsa behind was simply frightening...

I thought Jerusalem was relatively fine but maybe you're Jewish? I talked with some Jewish people on a sherut and they told me they would never go near the old city for fear of being attacked but tbh it was fine for me. The Temple Mount/Al Aqsa complex is simply the coolest and most unforgettable place I have ever been in my entire life.

Why would Jerusalem be dangerous for Jews?

The ancient walled part of the city (in which lies all the cool historical shit liek the Dome of the Rock, Wailing Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre) is technically in the West Bank - i.e. Palestine. It is almost totally populated by arabs and yet the most holy site in Judaism prompts ultra-orthodox Jewish people and of course ordinary Jews to visit. The Dome of the Rock/Al Aqsa complex lies directly above the Wailing Wall - the Wailing Wall IS the foundation of the Al Aqsa Mosque. Tension much? You bet!!!!!

Tijuana, Mexico  (crap border town)

Managua, Nicaragua (don't go there for humanitarian help, trust me)

East Saint Louis (just plain dirty)

Tel Aviv, Israel (very modern, just a heavy military presence, and the stories make it scarier)

Compton for me. Made a wrong turn with a car full of chicks. We had about 50 homies lifting up our door handles trying to get in. We ran that red light.
