What is the most outlandish smear ad that you have seen yet in lieu of the up coming mid-term elections? I don't get the opportunity to watch much television so I really have missed out on them this year. So please enlighten me to the 'ways of the smear' and share your top pick.

locally ours have been pretty tame, merely a mischaracterization of voting patterns

example 1:
"incumbent (X) voted against increased funding for our rural hospitals, what use does he have for them in the big city of atlanta"

this is a mischaracterization of why the candidate voted against it. alot of times, a representative will vote against a bill they normally would support because of the wording. while they may support the funding of the rural hospitals, they may not like the way the money is obtained, how the money is distributed, or may even think that the bill is underfunded and might vote against it because they want to see MORE money for said hospitals.

example B:

"Challenger (X) is in favor of a nationwide 23% sales tax on everything for everyone."

This is a mischaracterization of the bill itself. In this particular instance, it is in reference to the Fair Tax legislation. While techinically it is true that it is a 23% sales tax, it leads you to believe that everything will cost you 23% more. However, the Fair Tax bill would remove all embedded taxes involved in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of said product. Depending on what you're buying this can be anywhere from 20 to 33% of the cost of the product, with the state/local tax thrown on top. Even using the worst case scenario of only 20%, the product ends up costing about 1% cheaper under the fair tax. Not to mention the fact that every single person (tourist, drug dealer, whore, illegal alien) will not be able to avoid contributing to the tax base, coupled with the elimination of the IRS, will all add up to increased tax revenue and less cost to the government to collect it (more efficient/economical).

Just make sure you look into things for yourself before making a decision, after all, they're only 30 second ads, hardly a strong forum with which to properly educate yourself on a topic.
