i figured i should get one too. all my bf2 playing has been at a friends house, and i thought i should go out and get my own. i have about 1k to spend, and i already got a monitor to use. i need it to take to college next year so i need the basic programs, and to be able to run bf2 on medium.  I have NO idea how to build computer stuff so please don't tell me to go buy stuff and build from scratch (I'm like a caveman, I'm not good with computer) so would this be a good deal?
if not what would you suggest...
win xp home
P4 2.6 Ghz
512 MB ram
80 GB HD
DVD-ROM
Ge-Force Fx 128 MB 5700
would you guys think? thanks in advance, drug_dealer111
[Edit] all of this is for $700

There are much better prebuilt deals out there...

Go to Dell they should have some cheap deals going on since holiday season is on its way.

OP: Dell's even offering free upgrade coupons to Vista from WMC/XPP, but I hate having to install OS's like that. Whatever the case may be, you'll get a better deal with a Dell Dimension than with that setup you're listing.

If you really want to learn about computer hardware,

$37

Don't be fooled by the component-level screenshot. It's not going to try to teach you how to wire circuits on an electronics breadboard. A proper custom-build's going to be cheaper than a Dell, but only if you know what your doing or if someone else you know does, who's willing to do it for free.

Are you implying that a GeForce FX5700 256mb would give him more FPS? Cause you're wrong.

Processing power comes from, wait for it, the processor. More RAM does not equal more speed. Infact, if you have too much RAM, you will be slower.

I hate when people think more RAM = more speed, because it doesn't.

If that's not what you were implying, then nevermind.

more ram and better card should do you.  1gb of ram at a MINIMUM, on newegg (ram has gone up lately) it will run you around $100 a gb.  if your mobo supports agp then i had a 1600pro and it got the job done just fine.  you can find those for around $100 as well.  i suggest looking at newegg, as they have preassembled pc's as well.  besides, upgrading ram or video card is only pulling the old out and sliding in the new.  not hard at all.  and if you know how to google and click on the left mouse button, then you can install the latest drivers.

RAM hasn't really "gone up", it's just all the good DDR stuff is no longer available, as they're switching to DDR2.

Which REALLY angers me, as I was starting to really look at some G.Skill DDR500 2gb dual-channel stuff, for 180$. It sucks, because Newegg and some other gay site is G.Skill's only (that I can find) distributors.

For 1000 dollars, you can do much more. This is a gaming computer you are talking about, don't waste money by building a system that won't last long in the gaming industry.

I am currently pricing out parts for a computer myself, and it is not easy to get high quality for 1000 dollars, but I do have the parts for a solid system that will last a couple years.

Study up a little, and keep looking. Read guides of other computer builders. You will start to see which parts are used frequently enough to determine what is good and what isn't.

Good luck man!

Hmmz

Try the following (it cost me like AUD$1300 or thereabouts)

Motherboard - Albatron K8 SLi
Processor     - AMD 3500+
Video Card   - 7600GT (altho i got dual 7600GTs running in SLi)
HDD            - 200GB IDE (you could go with SATA too)
Case           - Some tower with a 550W PSU
RAM            - 4x512 DDR400 (the motherboard doesnt like single sticks of Generic RAM, so take multi sticks ie 2x512 (for 1 gig) or 4x512 (for 2 gigs)

I dunno what the cost would be in US$ but its gotta be cheaper than $1300

Ok, two things:

Why would you buy a 200GB IDE drive, when you could get 300+GB SATA drives for under 100$?

Second: Try to avoid 4x512mb of RAM at all costs, especially with an AMD. AMD 64-bit memory controllers dislike having four memory modules. Infact, if you have more than two DDR400 sticks running, it will get mad and reduce the speed from 200MHz, to 166MHz - which you generally can't change, or it won't POST.

Other than the fact that AMD 64-bit memory controllers just don't like it, 4x512mb of RAM is not very beneficial as the chips won't all talk to eachother, even in two channel. Each pair will communicate, but they won't communicate as a whole.

ram has gone up.  i bought a 1gb stick of patriot 333mhz back in march or so for only $67.00. on newegg. that same 1gb stick is now $107.00 on newegg.  almost doubled in price.  how do you explain that?  even my buddies went to computer shows back in early '06 and would stock up on the cheap priced ram.  i think $100 for a gb is too much.  i miss that $67.00 price.

Weird..

They're probally just charging more because of DDR2.
