i had to have a safty cours to get my gun permit

A safety course and some general training on how to use a gun would be nice requirements for a handgun license. It would probably decrease accidental handgun deaths here. I think such requirements would be better enforced by state and local laws rather than by the federal government, however.

Imagine this. Every woman has a nice little gun that they keep with them at all times and criminals know this.

I would agree with all of those reasons. But for me, you missed the important one - with a gun, you don't know whether you've just shot a criminal or your wife on the way to the bathroom. At least with a baseball bat you see the whites of their eyes.

Fair enough. However i believe it has alot to do with guns. Even if not directly, your culture stems from your constiution which allows guns, you past has involved a lot of warfare, again guns. While the states was being founded people would still use force to gain wealth, again guns.

Phantom, you're talking about homicide stats, not the rates. If he were to look at a chart showing rates, the percentile would be higher for most American cities vs. equivalent British ones.

I think you missed the actual meaning of the post under the 'ahahahas'.

He meant rate as in, say 12 gun deaths per 1000 people. Of course that would translate to a much smaller amount of gun deaths in a smaller country - but that IS irrelevant. If the RATE is the same, if you scaled it up it everything would be EXACTLY the same.

Well, I can definitely agree that America has a more violent culture, due to our bloody past. England has been around long enough to have sated its bloodlust in a cultural sense. Two World Wars accomplished that. America is still young enough to have that aggressive nature within its mindset. We're sort of the cowboys of the industrialized world, but there are some advantages to it as well....

England has 1/5 the pop of America. England has 160 homocides per year America has 5000 homocides a year.

160*5 = 800

5000/800 = 6.25

A person who is intent on Killing will do so with or without a gun. Thats an indisputable fact. Be it with an Ax or Knife or A Pick. What we need is stronger Enforcment on Illegal firearms and Better protection for our citizens who Carry legal firearms. Ease up on the Drug laws, Thus cutting back on the crime in the first place, Alot of the murders are caused because of manditory life for even small amounts of even Pot, But Most shooters can plea bargain down to a year or 6 months and probation. Does anyone else see a problem with that?

Tougher enforcement on criminal possesion of illegal firearms would go a long way in this battle, or atleast be a good start.

Dezerteagal5: Texas and NYC enjoy differing social climates, therefore comparing one with the other relative to gun violence results in an invalid benchmark.

herrr_smity: I wouldn't base it on fear. I'd base it on "just in case." So far, none of my weapons have shot anything other than paper targets. Chances are, I'll never shoot anyone in my whole life (unless I reenlist) but firearms ownership is still an insurance policy.

I don't actively campaign to sell guns to unarmed folk, and all I ask in return is that my rights to self-defense stops being legislated away tidbit-by-tidbit. I don't really give a rat's ass what the UN has to say about it, for all they've ever been effective.

I live in Australia. In Australia, citizens are NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY FIREARMS. Every year in Australia we have 70-80 deaths by shootings. This is out of a population of 21 million

In America, guns are everywhere. Every year in the USA, there are around 28 000 deaths by shootings. I'll say that again: TWENTY EIGHT THOUSAND!!! out of 295 million.

Taking into account the difference in populations between Australia and America, there are about 23 times as many deaths by shootings in the USA than here.

While that's true, federal law makes it illegal for a resident of one state to purchase a firearm in another state.

And just something to think about before you go blaming the gun for crime. Why is the homicide rate so high in California, which has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country, but in the state of Vermont, which has some of the most lax laws in the country, (you don't even need a permit to carry a concealed weapon), the homicide rate is extremely low. If you actually look at homicide rates in the United States state by state, you will find that the states that have the most crime, tend to have the most restrictive gun laws. And the states with the fewest gun laws tend to have the least crime.

In fact, if you were to compare a state like Vermont to the UK you would probably find that Vermont has a lower homicide rate.
