I kinda had the same problem when I installed 1.4 patch. I had no idea what was going on, but I uninstalled bf2 and reinstalled and patched with the full 1.4 instead of the incremental. I don't know if that will help but it did for me. I also tried that punkbuster setting but it had no effect on the lag.

Sounds like wireless. I had wireless on my PC and yeah I had lag every 30secs or so.
I have since gone back to ethernet and viola no probs.

Disable your wireless and use ethernet
Oh what was your wireless speed?

Are you using the default Windows wireless controller thingy? I had a problem recently and when I installed the software that came with my card instead it fixed it completely. The Windows app sucks arse, give whatever brand card's software a try

Hey, download Yahoo Toolbar, run Norton spyware scan and delete the files it finds. Then, if you are running your internet through your router, reinstall the settings for your router if you have software cd. Give it some time and eventually it will be fine. If no router, and you are running it straight from the cable box, then go to http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and check your speed during the game (Alt and Tab out). If ping is still jumping, contact your local provider support and find out when your ping is jumping (it could be their fault from a possible power outage).  Hope this helps. -eyesteponbabies

System restore doesn't fix viruses and shit if you have any. I'd recommend that you do a full reinstall of windows. I could tell that you shouldn't enable system restore. Believe it or not I use windows without antivirus & anti spyware and haven't got any problems at all in these 4 years . The only thing that those antivirus programs do efficiently is to suck resources.

Also, MS issues several patches now and then, you should keep an eye on that.  You should increase the security issues in whatever browser you use (cookies, content, etc.). And don't click on those "you won...", "free pronsites..." banners, they usually carry adware in them.

There are a lot of tips that I could give you but one thing if for sure, don't trust the supposed security and stability of any OS.

Hmm, you should plug in directly to your modem with an Ethernet cable and see if the problem persists. This way you can rule out your ISP itself. If that works fine, then you should plug in directly to the router. If those two work, then there's most likely an issue with your wireless connection on the laptop.

You should also try reinstalling your wireless card drivers/software. If the HP wireless assistant is screwing things up, then there might be some issue with the drivers.

Look, its not my damn router.  I got NO lag before I reinstalled, with the exact damn router settings and internet settings, and etc.  Please, if there any advice that doesnt have to do with my router, please tell me.

You have to try a wired connection. That's the only way to figure out if it's hardware related, or software related. Just plug in directly to either your modem or router and fire up BF2. See if the lag spikes still happen. My guess is they'll stop so you can then move on to tweaking stuff on your comp.

Yeah. Wireless occasionally drops out, causing connection problems. Usually it is ok when just surfing the internet, but when playing games, it screws you up.

No system restore...
I just back up stuff on an external hard drive and start from scratch whenever Windows starts getting pissy

I have Norton on my computer, along with another spyware program.  And it's not the ping that's jumping around....just the computer itself lags, and framerate drops suddenly.  Bleh.  Good try though, thanks

Eagles just did a full reinstall of windows, and is having this problem now, after the reinstall.
I have all (and I mean all) of the Windows updates....and I know that those of slowed my computer down somewhat.
I never click on that you won crap...and those porn banners.
I have disabled/closed my anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware/adware scanners before playing the game.....with no effect on in-game performance.

I've also given a suggestion earlier with no reply to it. I'm not saying it will fix it but I wasn't the only one who had serious lag issues after installing the incremental 1.4 patch. try reinstalling bf2 with the full 1.4 patch, it helped me out. At this point your frustrated and don't seem to be getting the answers your looking for. Reinstalling won't make it any worse.

Another family member did the restore while I was away, and I'm pretty sure they reinstalled windows.

So what's the status on this? And did you try a wired connection to see if it's your wireless card/software?

I am experiencing the same problem!!!!  Now first off lets make sure everyone is crystal clear on the problem.......we are experiencing Frames Per Second spikes.....NOT I repeat NOT ping or lag issues. Our FPS fluctuates randomly during game play.  Makes it nearly impossible to fly a jet or heli!  I go from 100fps one second down to 12fps the next second, & this happens while sitting idle, no arty strike, nothing!!!!  I have absolutely nothing running in the background, I’ve hit ctrl, alt, del & killed all the task running, disable antivirus, spyware, & firewalls.  I’ve tried all the tips listed on all the forums, pbupdate, pb checks, rename bf2.exe, defrag, reinstall v1.4 patch, etc.....Here is the kicker, if I set all my settings to LOW, AA & AF OFF, 800x600 Resolution, Audio to LOW, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!  I have the system to run everything on high!!!!  P4 3.0GHz (Northwood) Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition (AGP) running Catalyst 6.10 drivers
2GB DDR400 (4x512MB / Kingston) 7,200 RPM SATA hard drives (2x 120GB / Mirror Array / Seagate) Creative X-fi PCI sound card!!!   ALL windows updates, most current drivers for EVERY component.

I do not want to format & reinstall everything unless I know it will fix my problem. I am curious if the other people experiencing this problem are also running ATI cards? By no means am I trying to be rude & let me add that forums are great & everyone’s feedback is great but.......if you don’t have a clue about something, then it would be better to just read & not reply
