Poll
Do you think Iraq will decide the US mid term elections?
Yes | 47% | 47% - 22 | ||||
No | 28% | 28% - 13 | ||||
Go shoot yourself through the roof of your mouth... | 23% | 23% - 11 | ||||

If the majority of Americans think that we need to pull out of Iraq, or at least change current strategies w/ Iraq, then hopefully they'll vote for candidates who would be willing to throw these ideas to Congress.
I think the do nothing congress will be the deciding factor in the next election. Honestly though, i dont wanna see the dems take anything from the funding in Iraq. the only people that suffer are the soldiers when that happens.
All I know is that Bush won't be president anymore. [/nobrainer]
And don't try to blame me for our next shit-ass president, none of our candidates are any good.

Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it
Who are the candidates?

You can't blame it all on one thing. This administration has displayed REPEATED incompetence, and a REPEATED propensity to either lie or ignore any facts that disagree with them.
I think the big turning point was Katrina. Well prior to that, you had a lot of people casting doubt on the administration's competence, transparency, and priorities, but I think the average American still had faith in the administration, or even if they had some doubts themselves, they were still able to maintain a comfortable level of denial. But then with Katrina, this time the victims of incompetence were Americans who were speaking English, telling us about their plight on the local news. Not even the Fox News correspondents on the ground in New Orleans could find the positive spin.
With Katrina, all the accusations against the administration's handling of 9/11, the War On Terror, and/or Iraq were laid out in front of our faces. The lack of preparation. The lack of understanding about the true conditions. The political agendas. The willful disregard of information. The meager, substandard response. The finger-pointing and blaming of the press. The unwillingness to admit mistakes and failures.
After that, America lost its faith and trust in the administration. Once it was OK for mainstream America to start questioning the Bush administration, real conservatives started to wake up to the fact that a damn lot of things about the Bush administration flies in the face of true conservatism. America as a whole gradually started entertaining complaints and detractors. Since then it's just been a downhill avalanche, with the Foley thing and the State of Denial book thing just speeding things along.
Iraq is impotant, big, and ongoing, but Iraq is just an ongoing series of body blows. Katrina was the 47-hit combo with the high-punch leaping sho-ryu-ken finish.

good points, shipbuilder.
I would agree that this election will be determined by multiple things. What I'm not so sure of is if the Democrats can actually capitalize on the current situation.

Iraq will be the deciding factor. That and the border.
Most people know the Democrats got bumpkiss except their hatred of Bush.
Fail/no sale/ not good enough.
Common sense says this war isn't going as bad as the press would have you believe.
The Republicans will retain boths house and senate.
The dems will cry.
Life will go on.

Yes, Iraq will decide the mid-terms. That's all the Dems will focus on . . . causing the Reps to win. The Dems might win more elections if they'd come out strong and state what they actually stand for: abortion on demand, higher taxes, defunding and weakening our military, etc etc. But they can't do that because if they admit what they really stand for, they get smoked in the elections. Actually, they even get smoked when they smokescreen what they stand for! America is not fooled, everyone knows what elected Dems stand for. As much as they try to paint themselves a different stripe to rake in votes. Strange tactics, no wonder they lose.
Katrina? That's the killer blow? Dems are in more trouble than I thought.The_Shipbuilder wrote:

probably true but what exactly does the GOP have besides not "cutting and running"?ATG wrote:

Part of me wants to see a Democrat House to put at least some check on the administration. The other part want to see the GOP ride this Iraq thing right down the toilet.
That's the Dem mindset in a nutshell and is exactly why they will lose. They're that out of touch with the values a majority of America hold dear.Reciprocity wrote:

Theres the tax cuts the dems are slavering to undo.Reciprocity wrote:

There the discomfort of the enemy knowing we have a team that is hunting them down and killing them.
Theres the easing of weapons restrictions in America.
Truth is; dumb and dumber. We are being tricked into thinkking these a big differencfe between the two when clearly there is not
No matter what, Congress will be filled with sleazy, greedy, deceptive car-salesmanesque human beings who will continue running business as usual. Pick your poison.
It's a fucking question, genius. I hear a lot about not cutting and not running, fine, whatever. But what exactly is the plan? The handing over security thing doesn't seem to be working right now. are they going to stick with it or is there something else?Stingray24 wrote:

The plan? Finish the job and get Iraq controlling it's own security. I'm not a military expert, so go ask our generals what the specific plan is to achieve that. All the Dems do is criticize, never putting forth any ideas at all, besides withdrawal. If the elected Dems have better ideas, I haven't heard them yet.

I feel so reassured with all that good news.

derka derka.
Are you really that confident, given that every major poll conducted in the past few months has the Dems either ahead or really super far ahead? Or do you think polls are bunk?ATG wrote:

and hopefully... the rest of the world will continue to grow in power and lessen the U.S.'s influence.ATG wrote:

It's about time America had some competition in the "superpower" category. Without this, America starts to throw its weight around carelessly. It's too bad the Cold War ended... It kept us in check and balanced.
The Dems might as well hang it up. America is a lost cause in many cultural regards. Then again, the country will eventually wake up when the military industrial complex consumes the government. Of course, by then, it will be too late to do much about it.Stingray24 wrote:

All the more reason to destroy the government from within. If corruption is what the system now stands for, then let it fall upon itself. Keep the same imbeciles in power until it implodes upon itself. Just make sure you buy lots of weapons and ammo beforehand.ATG wrote:
