They have their rights but what put chills down my spine is when the students lowered the American flag and raised it upside down with a Mexican flag on top of it. That is unacceptable behavior from ANY group who is seeking out equality. Just like the American flags being raised in Iraq when the war started. If I were  them I would be upset. This argument could go many ways but I feel it is disrepectful to do that to any nations flag. (I havent said any thing stupid yet so here it goes) Unless it is France, they are creepy.
Totally agree. But we all know that a group of overzealous students aren't indicative of the whole group. I really believe is that most people participating in the marches would have been just as uneasy if not more so with that sort of nonsense. I'm pro-environment, but I think a lot of Greenpeace tactics are horribly damaging to everyone else's efforts.
Yeah I live on the east coast so its kind of hard to gather an unbiased view of what happened that week seeing how all I saw is what the news showed me. What was it like anyways? If you or someone reading this was there, what was the general overtone of the whole situation? It was tough to stomach that Mexican activist guy (the one who promotes a national anthem in spanish). That guy needs to go.
There were no accounts of violence, and a huge mix of American and Mexican flags. It was very clear that the people who organized everything were VERY aware that anything they did would be scrutinized 100x more than the average I'm-an-angry-college-student-but-daddy's-rich-so-don't-fuck-with-me type protest. For the next few days, people were talking about how there was no vandalism and NO TRASH on the streets after the protests went through. As someone who saw it on the streets of downtown LA, I can say that the order maintained and the overall "peaceful" nature of the whole thing was pretty incredible for a mass protest of 100,000 people.

It was also somewhat integrated. Obviously the majority were Mexican and other Latinos but there were also whites/blacks/Asians scattered throughout. And of the Latinos you saw the full cross section - the papi gangster looking types with the wifebeaters and Dodgers hats & tats; the meek looking Guatemalan maids with their kids; the quiet construction guy types with their work clothes, the well-off families and preppy USC/UCLA Latino students, etc.

I heard that the big Latino radio stations in town had a huge part to play both in getting people out there and in encouraging people to demonstrate in a respectful and civil way.

Of course you don't see other countries doing this if you don't look for it.
My neighbors step brother is in the army and was over in germany for about 2 years and its worse over here then it is there with the different language crap.
That's 1 country out of over 180 other ones. Having an intimate knowledge of Germany and the US doesn't allow you to say "you don't see other countries doing this".

Can I say that everyone in the United States thinks George Bush is dumber than a rock if me and my neighbor's step-brother believe it to be so?
Why would other countries do this crap anyways?  Our country is too nice and people are taking advantage of it which doesnt help us.

Once again, there really isn't anything to discuss here.  America doesn't have a national language, even though the majority of the citizens and businesses use English as their primary language.

Having adverts in languages other than English is perfectly acceptable unless our government legislates a National language, just as Canada has done with French and English.

If you have enough money, and you feel that a larger purchasing market for whatever you are advertising is one that speaks a certain language, then by all means you are allowed to produce adverts in that language.  That's what our freedoms allow us to do here in the States, people...

We speak English because our country was founded by English speaking men and women. Our Constitution is written in it. Our Declaration of Independence is written in it. Everything is based on the English language and our brave forefathers who died for the red, white and blue speak it. Even the ones from other lands learned to speak it.

lol....heeznutz. It really in my arguement has nothing to do with free trade. It is simply, to me, rude. I am not saying Im right therefore I have no facts or evidence to support an arguement. I am working off emotion. I pay $49.95 a month for my cable (which I should be stealing but the wife wont allow it) and there are 3 spanish channels. So really, I am being forced to pay for Spanish speaking channels. I say forced because NFL is a must in my home. It is more annoying to me than anything. I would certainly never go to a Spanish speaking country and demand things in English, its rude. They cater to us anyway because of the tourism market. Their choice not mine.

Personally, it doesn't bug me in the least when I see advertisements or hear people speak in their native languages.  They are Free to do so here, and hopefully it can stay that way...

I understand where you're coming from.  In a way, I wish it was that simple.  The truth of the matter is that these corporations see the rising market of Hispanics, and as a result, they are anticipating the language shift of the country.  I wouldn't doubt it if America becomes bilingual on a national scale in about 20 years.  Demographers have suggested that Hispanics will equal whites as a proportion of the U.S. population in about 30 years.  If this becomes reality, we can expect to see a gradual rise in the use of Spanish here.

I admit, a recent trip I took to Miami really shocked me language-wise.  I found myself lost in an area of that city where, due to my lack of Spanish fluency, I found it difficult to navigate the neighborhoods and marketplaces.  I can definitely sympathize with the feeling of having your own country getting consumed by foreign influences, but at this point, there's not much we can do other than adapt.

Because we are a free society, many Hispanics are taking advantage of the promise that America offers.  Although I despise how so many illegally enter this country, I respect the legal immigrants for being such hard workers (most of the time, at least).  Dealing with the illegals is the hard part....

I agree to an extent, what about that Mexican man (cant remember name) who proposed a National Anthem in Spanish? That bothers me. I am not trying to insult you or argue, I am simply saying there is a line being crossed by some (not all). It is unfortunate for the thousands or more legit immagrants who have busted their ass the legal way, and have become more patriotic than some idiots who were born here, have some prick like the one I mentioned ruin their reputations. The mere notion of proposing a country shares their national anthem with another version is obsurd and not going to be tolerated no matter what we have declared as a language, or havent for that matter.

It's the World Series, ffs.  There are more people in the world that have Spanish as their first language than English so why the hell not?  If you're going to call it the World Series, you gotta accept what comes with it.

The real question should be "Why weren't there any chinese/hindi adverts?"

Dont forget where you travellers came from you so called 'Americans'. I love the American way of life even though I do not live there, I live in England and feel we would benefit from your way of thinking, However all the Mexican people want to do is better their own lives with 'THE DREAM' just like your forefathers did when they settled there all them years ago, so its a bit hypocritical of you to state that America is just for Americans.

I don't think he means that American is just for Americans, I think he would me more "If you owe here, then be an American, not a pissy-ass Mexican". I have many friends who are Americans of Mexican heritage, but they are AMERICANS- they came here, saw that English is our working language, did their best to learn it, to fit in as a family- families communicate, & through communication they become tighter.
I have no use for the piece of crap "immigrants" that come here to work, take the money, then run- "I'm here to make money, send it home, buy a villa, then fuck you Americans- Mexico is better!" O-RLY? Funny, the freedom of speech is here, decent paying jobs are here (but rapidly disappearing, in part thanks to the "Hey, let's go to U.S., make money, live 30 people in one house & accept shit pay, then split - Back to MaMa Mexico!") As long as industry can get these dirt-cheap workers, they can afford to screw the working man. Come here, become an American, respect this country, or GET THE FUCK OUT!!!!
Don't come here, saying "Americans" like it's a bad thing- Don't like it, leave! Hell, you had to sneak across the border to get here, turn your ass in &  we'll send you back free of charge- Nobody is forcing you to stay, if some one came into my house & said "I'm here, give me food, shelter, the same rights of one of your family, but kiss my ass when it comes to expecting courtesy & respect" Let me tell Ya, I would knock the fuck out of them, & they'd wake up (maybe) somewhere out in the middle of No Man's Land- with an old work boot rammed up there ass to remind them of the time they talked shit to a working man. We have our problems here in the U.S.A., every country has some problems-  But America, she's my Girl, I'm willing to fight & die to defend Her. If you don't feel the same, you don't belong here.

Yet it was American (English speaking) companies who decided to create the commercials in the first place. So why bash the Mexicans. Why isn't this thread addressing the real culprit.

What the hell are you bitching about. Go post this crap in an immigration thread. We are talking about Chevrolet ( an American english speaking company) who created this spanish commercial. Why haven't I read a "fuck Chevy" post. I know why, Americans are not as smart as they think. So quick to jump on a bandwagon even though they don't know where its going.
