I'm not perfect, but I still believe in a heaven and a god. If I reach the end of my life and there is nothingness, then I won't be disappointed because every part of me will cease to exist, so I won't know the difference.
But if there is a chance that being an ass hat in life will cause you unimaginable pain and suffering for as long as time itself, I would like to think that I tried the best I could to keep myself upright just incase I'm lucky enough to see heaven.
As for all those people that ask, "if god came today, would you know that you are saved?" I answer, "no, i do not know... but I trust that God will view my life and all its moments and judge me fairly."
