Each weapon in the game has a specific purpose and use.
Each class has specific uses as well.

The key to being a decent player is using the kit and weapon that fits your situation.
Let’s run through some examples.

If you are good at ultra-long range, take a sniper rifle, find a spot and get to work.  Wait for enemies to stop and get the head shot if you have a bolt action.  Be careful with the M95.  EVERYONE can hear each and every shot you take.  Try not to silhouette yourself against the sky or another contrasting background.  Once your position is discovered, someone will come for revenge.
Bolt action snipers are designed for head-shot kills
Semi-auto snipers are generally used for multiple shot kills

If you are good at mid-to-long range, take a gun that will work at range.  Don’t enter close combat if that is your weak area.  Stay out of alleys, and keep an eye out for enemy snipers.  Unless you have a bolt action sniper rifle, set your gun to single shot and start taking reasonably well aimed shots and don’t be afraid to use half a clip.  Try for good shots, but if your enemy is running, take as many as you need.  Try to remain concealed.  If you have a rifle/carbine you will not be a match for a skilled sniper at extreme distance.
Spec-op, Medic, and Assault are good all around guns. (auto for CQB and single shot for range) These are not the best at either.  They are “mid range” weapons.  This does not mean they are “bad” at close and long ranges, just that they are not the best in those areas.

Mid-range is dominated by assault rifles, machine guns and carbines.  Avoid alleys and wide open areas.  If you are a mid-range player, you are probably the most versatile, but be aware of your weaknesses.  Beware of shotguns and snipers.

If you like close combat (CQB), stay close and use cover to close distances.  Never run a quarter mile toward someone with an AK if you have a shotgun!  If you work at short ranges, weave in and out of cover, around buildings and hills to sneak up on someone.  Few things are worse than to suddenly be confronted by an enemy with an auto shotgun at close range.
Engineer and AT unlockable shotguns are the kings of CQB.

**If you are confronted by an enemy on terrain you are weak at, try to move to a better position.  This may mean retreating into an alley to set an ambush, or running out of a confined space to get more distance between yourself and your enemy.
Sometimes it is wise to move onto terrain that you are only marginally good at in order to put your enemy at a significant disadvantage.

Non-primary weapons.
If you wind up needing a mid-range shot and have a shotgun, or need some CQB teeth with a sniper, your pistol is a valuable weapon.  The damage the pistol deals is low, but its rate of fire and accuracy are surprisingly high.

For enemies under cover, use GLs, rockets, or grenades…or simply outmaneuver them.

Vehicles.
These are tools to be used.  Don’t abuse your access to vehicles (whoring).  If someone is a skilled pilot/driver let them fly.  You can do very well as a gunner for a good pilot.  Tanks and APCs are not one-man armies.  Always travel with other vehicles or infantry.  They can protect you from hidden AT players or Spec-ops.
If your in a car without a gunner, don’t be afraid to run over your enemy.

The Real Key is to find what you are good at and use that to your advantage and let others fill in your weak areas.

Sorry this is so long.
I hope this helps.
