I've had this problem since I 1st bought BF2 and i've never found a solution for it. Now this may be an outright hardware issue but I really dont know.

My Specs-
X800XL 256MB
1GB DDR400
AMD 64 3000+

All medium 1024x768

My FPS is perfect as long as theres no combat around. The second any kind of combat breaks out is the time that my FPS takes a nosedive, and im talking serious nosedive....from 60 to 29-30FPS. Even if its a simple 4 man skirmish my FPS wants to die for no apparent reason. 64 man servers are a no no for me, and even 32 man servers kill my FPS when the combat is heavily concentrated.

Now an x800XL at the time BF2 released was considered to be one of the high end cards ATI had. Along with the x850 and x800XT. So I cant understand why my FPS is hurting in taxing situations. The FPS really hurts on maps like Mashtuur City. Especially around the middle mosque flag, any kind of combat there and my FPS gets destroyed.

I searched for spyware and viruses and nothing was found. I have all drivers and my HDD is defragged on a weekly basis. My specs are more than edequate for at least medium settings and even on all low, my FPS hurts during combat.

But like I said if I join a completely empty server with MAX settings and walk or fly around, my FPS is perfectly fine, but it seems like the "players" in general destroy my performance.

Hi my fellow brother in arms!!!!

Your problem seems to be the lack of RAM!!!
BF2 eats tons of it, so with medium i would recommend at least 1 1/2 GB, 2 would be better of course!!!

Buy more RAM, even if it doesn´t help you with this problem it will help you in the future, believe me!!!!
Had the same problem with 1 GB back in the days!!!!

Hope this helps you!!!!!

Hey there,

I run BF2 on similar specs with almost the same hardware...1GB of ram is more than enough. It sounds like it could be network issues...maybe trouble with your ISP...

Whats your network setup?

Is it just lag maybe?

Otherwise:
Try opening up your case and giving it a good clean and check that all the fans are working...sometimes hardware overheating can cause a BIG decrease in FPS.

Let us know if that doesn't help

I disabled my paging file and i'm getting much better performance. Not the best, but much better. Just played Wake Island 48 man server and average 55-60FPS. Pretty good I suppose...combat isnt much of a killer now, but I still drop to about 30FPS in the heaviest of combat. But at least light combat gives me 45+FPS now

I suppose I just need more RAM or a better CPU.

I have DSL.
SBC/AT&T to be exact. My ping averages about 50-70 in most servers, below 20 if the servers in my state.
Not sure what my ISP is though.

In the "Network Connections" panel in the "Control Panel" it says-

Local Area Connection
Connected
Realtek RTL8139

Packets-

Sent- 79,465
Recieved- 53,891
Speed- 100.00mbps
Status- Connected

if its your ram.. turn your textures n stuff on low...  but i had a p4 3ghz comp and i noticed the more the people the more the lag.

go to watch a demo... if you dont know how.. search   but play it on max speed.  if when you choose the fastest speed, and it doesnt really feel like its going that fast, then its your processor.   When i watched a demo and put it on fast playing... it would almost just go 100% speed.  I got a new comp and now it really plays the right speed.

also i still lag sometimes during arty n stuff... you may turn your effects to low if they arent there already.

Have you set dynamic lighting and dynamic shadows to medium as well (you need 256MB video RAM for that)? Try again with those disabled. Anti-aliasing is disabled, I suppose?

What kind of sound hardware are you using? Do you have EAX enabled? What's your ingame sound setting? Try "Hardware-medium" with EAX disabled.

Diabling VoIP might help as well, if you don't use it.

May be a RAM issue I suppose.
If I just walk around an empty server with all medium settings or even MAX settings, my FPS it 60 or higher.
So I know my video card and the rest of my system is working properly, but its just "combat" is what kills my performance.

I love mashtuur City, its my favorite map, but sadly the only way I can play it without lagging is to snipe, because when you use the sniper scope your FPS jumps to like 80.

I heard BF2 is way more GPU intensive than it is CPU. I dont play huge servers either. Biggest ones are Legion @ War and Insomnia mashtuur which are both 48 and 52 man servers. I used to only karkand on my old account w/ 32 man servers and I still lagged during aNY KIND OF COMBAT.

I could run all low, sure, but it would be ridiculous to do that with a x800XL. People with 5900's and 9800pro's run all low, not x800XL's.

THis problem is really riduclous.

- And yes everythings set to medium. I did set dyn lighting & shadows to low, but got little to no performance difference.

btw arty doesnt dent my FPS at all. MY GPU seems to work like a champ for the most part, but it just fails miserably in combat.

Older games like Call of duty run perfectly fine maxed out full AA and AF....

well alot of people overstate their fps by alot... i had an x800 for a while and a 9800 ... and they ran the same because my processor was the problem.

and you cant go by an empty server ...

if its ram lag... it will be as if your loading during gameplay... i used to be able to tell the difference between ram lag and fps lag.    ram lag will be longer... but wont last forever  fps are short lags... but will be continuous for a while.

you may dl and run 3dmark 05 i think... my old comp got a score of 410 on the cpu part... it was pretty bad  youll want a 700+ for  bigger population servers

and i run on low settings and i have a 7800 gt... well except for geometry on high and effects medium

I get zero loading pauses at all, even in the biggest of servers, loading pauses are  non-existent.
The lag I get are just tiny little hitches, short like you said. This only happens when I turn towards the fighting. If i'm facing away the games smooth as butter.

Could be my CPU I suppose.
