http://users.chartertn.net/aaronu/the_(so_called)_great_mac_vs_pc_debate.htm
This "debate" came from that cable channel that keeps getting mentioned on my stupid user stories. After being exposed to computers and talking about computers for a few years you would think they'd learn something about computers. The host on their newbie help show tries to claim that he's not pro-mac but he's way to forgiving to the faults of the mac. When a similar or less severe fault shows up on a PC or PC software he tends to call the product garbage.
One day the host of the newbie call in help show had a debate between two people on which computer was better for a student, a PC or a Mac. One slight problem, BOTH people he got to debate were MAC users. Now how's that for fair and unbiased reporting. I'm glad this guy isn't on a voting commission in California (where the show is broadcast from). So I decided that I would like to give my answers to their debate. The format is this, first is the question asked, second the answer from the Mac user on the show, third is my answer (and comment on the Mac user's answer), last is the "PC" user's answer given on the show.
My computer is best for graphics because...
Mac
Many design-related businesses are Mac-centric. When it comes to the trivialities of handing off files, most places have Mac Zip drives and so on. You don't have to worry about them not being able to access your files.
The Macintosh embraced the design community early on. Like many designers, I've been working on a Macintosh for more than a decade.
Some graphic applications interfaces are just easier to use on the Mac.
My response
What does this have to do with the graphics capabilities of the machine? Besides every year the number of design firms using exclusively Macs gets smaller and smaller because of the cost. Also if you’re doing serious 3D graphics you don’t even think about using a Mac. You use a SGI or a high end PC running Windows NT.
Who cares? Mercedes-Benz invented the automobile, but not everyone that can afford a luxury car drives a Mercedes do they? There are other luxury cars out there that are just as good or better that a Mercedes aren’t there? Take for example Rolls-Royce. I realize this analogy doesn't quite fit the Mac vs. PC argument. Computers aren't nearly as expensive as luxury cars and Apple never invented anything. So comparing Apple to a company that actually invented something really isn't fair.
That’s a big steaming load of BS. Mac has icons, Windows has icons, X windows has icons, OS/2 has icons. Mac has menus, Windows has menus, X windows has menus, OS/2 has menus. It takes about a minute to figure out how to use them.
PC
Macs dominate the graphic design realm for a reason. Just as PCs dominate the Web server/programming realm. PCs are very capable of graphic design -- they have the programs (PhotoShop, Illustrator, and so on) -- but for a serious graphic designer, Macs are the way to go.
My computer interface is best for students because...
Mac
They're cool. If I went into someone's dorm in school and saw a PC, they were either a geek or they had no sense of style. For better or worse, the design community has embraced the Macintosh. Owning a Mac is like riding a motorcycle -- instant cool.
The design industry is filled with Mac-lovers. Most design houses work on Macs.
Mac has made their products easy to maintain and upgrade. It is still easier to add hardware to a Mac than a PC.
The Mac assumes that you are a creative creature. They come with a good sound card, a microphone, a decent video card, and a Trinitron (or similarly flat-surfaced) monitor (if you buy Apple's monitor).
My response
If using a 500Mhz Mac is riding a motorcycle then my 800 Mhz PIII (with 64MB video card) must be a Ferrari. If you want colors (which is what I assume you mean by cool) Compaq has a line of computers with color inserts that can be changed. With the Macs your stuck with the color you buy. Also there some colored ATX PC cases now you can get from TigerDirect. Or check out www.colorcase.com
How does what the design industry uses affect a student in English, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Medicine, Sociology, etc. The answer is that it doesn’t.
Easy to upgrade? Are you joking? You can still run Windows 95 on a 386. Apple has made it a policy to force users to buy a brand new machine if they want a new OS upgrade (and new software). Also I’ve seen Apple’s comparisons of adding hardware to a Mac vs. PC. They compared adding an EXTERNAL hard drive to the Mac to adding an INTERNAL hard drive to the PC. They added steps to the PC like adding a controller card. My motherboard has support for 8 drives without adding a controller card. Also there are more Hardware and Software options for upgrading a PC.
My computer has a 64MB video card and Sound Blaster Live audio card. It sounds and looks better than the best Mac out there and it only cost me $1700. Adding a 19" Trinitron (CPD-E400 straight from Sony) would add another $540.00. That’s still a lot less than a comparable machine from Apple.
Yes I know they don’t have a fifth point but I want to add something. Cost is a very big issue for students. You can get a PC that will do everything that a student needs for $400.00. All you’ll get from Apple for $400.00 is a hearty belly laugh.
PC
Windows is the most popular operating system. It makes it easier to share files with fellow students and professors. Using Windows as a student prepares you for working in the real world.
My computer offers more software choices...
Mac
This isn't the case. However, of the software that is most important to designers it all comes for the Mac. It is also easier to use on the Mac.
My response
Yes, and all the software that is important to "designers" comes for the PC, IN THE EXACT SAME VERSION. This "easier to use on the Mac" is just BS. I hear this stuff all the time. I’ve even had a Mac zealot try to lie and say that the Mac versions of software have more features than the PC version. These programs are no harder to use on the PC than on a Mac.
PC
There is more freeware available on the Internet for Windows.
My computer is best because...
Mac
Quite simply, the Macintosh provides the best all-around experience. The OS is easier to use. The Finder is superior to the Explorer. The Desktop isn't a hack and you can name your files whatever you want.
My response
Nope. Again the Mac zealots retreat to the "easier to use" argument. Both of them are GUIs. It should take anyone no more than a day or two to learn how to use it. The Finder is superior to the Explorer? The Explorer shows you all the files on your machine, the Finder does a search. If you want to search in Windows go to start then search. Also how is the Windows shell a "hack"? I assume that the Mac zealots think that the user shouldn’t be able to get to the command line. Well MOST of the Operating Systems on computers work that way. And what’s stopping you from naming your files anything you want on a PC. In fact Windows has a larger limit on filenames than Mac does.
PC
PCs are compatible with the majority of the Internet. The industry is saturated with PCs. Ninety percent of the Web is viewed on a PC. The difference in color palette is just enough to make a huge difference in the look of your website.
My computer is more affordable because...
Mac
It's not more affordable, but I'd rather have a Cube and 22-inch Cinema Display in my environment than any of the god-awful designs that are available from most PC manufacturers. The exception to this would be the iMac, which is competitively priced and a great buy for anyone who doesn't need or want to make complex purchasing decisions.
My response
Oh yes, heaven forbid that you have to THINK for a minute when you’re buying something that can cost thousands of dollars. And certainly it’s better to have a little box that you CAN’T add any devices to than to have a mid-tower case that you could add a couple of drives to. Ok I’ll stop being sarcastic now. Look, I can buy a 22" display for my PC too and it will look just as good (probably better).
PC
Cheaper is better. You can build a fast PC and add and expand for less money than a Mac. You can get a screamingly fast Pentium, a ton of RAM, and lots of hard drive space -- all for less than $1,000.
There is plenty of freeware and inexpensive shareware all over the Internet for PC Web building. Later down the road, you can turn your PC into a Web server easily. PCs are optimized for the Internet, e-commerce, webpages, and hosting sites.
Yeah, but my Amiga would have kicked your Macs arse ;-)Hellfire(Fish) wrote:

I mean, if all games were made for both platforms, which would you honestly choose?
I would actually choose mac.
I mean, looking back at my macintosh from 10 years ago, here is what I saw...
1. It NEVER CRASHES
2. It used a SCSSI interface for its hard drives
3. It may have a slower processor, but last time I checked, doesn't AMD make slower processors that kick the shit out of pentiums runnning almost twice their speed?
4. The one button mouse was never a problem. (You never needed to right click. I'm serious. And if you don't believe me, go buy a mac )
5. My mac using Mac OS9 looks about like windows 2000.
6. I was digitally editing photos on my mac WAY before it was easy to do on a PC.
7. I never had a problem with sharing files to PCs...
8. Macintoshs have always been excellent computers for me.
Now, I will say that since the only games I could play on MAC were blizzard games at the time, I didn't have a real big selection.
BUT, Diablo 2, starcraft, and warcraft 2 totally rocked my world
Anyway, Macintoshs are just plain better computers. At least in my opinion.
and... I am honestly tired of having to deal with the way I have to reinstall windows every 1-2 years because it starts slowing down and getting laggy.
I mean, I can STILL do things on that old mac...
I can't say that about PCs I had 10 years ago.
When it comes down to it, this is what I think:
1. Macintoshs are just better computers.
2. Microsoft AND Apple have become giant greedy corporations that don't really deserve my money anyway.
