Maybe NK did fake it -

MSNBC wrote:

WASHINGTON - Results from an initial air sampling after North Korea’s announced nuclear test showed no evidence of radioactive particles that would be expected from a large nuclear detonation, a U.S. government intelligence official said Friday.

The test results do not necessarily mean the North Korean blast was not a nuclear explosion, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the sampling results.

The U.S. government remains uncertain of the nature of the underground explosion, although the air sampling tends to reinforce earlier doubts about whether the test blast was entirely successful, officials said.

Data from seismic sensors indicated the explosion was smaller than expected. Scenarios include the possibilities that the explosion was caused by conventional explosives, that the site was so well sealed that no radioactive matter was released, or that it was such a small test that it did not yield enough radioactive debris to be picked up.

The air sample was taken Tuesday by a specialized aircraft, the WC-135, flying from Kadena air base in Okinawa, Japan. It apparently took the sample over the Sea of Japan, between the Korean mainland and Japan.

China: No radiation
In Beijing, a government official said Friday that Chinese monitoring also has found no evidence of airborne radiation from North Korea’s claimed nuclear test. The official with the State Environmental Protection Administration said China has been monitoring air samples since the test-explosion Monday.

“We have conducted air monitoring and found no radiation in the air over Chinese territory so far,” said the official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly release the information. The official declined to explain how the Chinese monitoring was conducted.

The U.S. intelligence official said an initial result from testing of the U.S. air sample became available late this week. He said a final result would be available within days but the initial finding is considered conclusive.

It was not immediately clear whether the WC-135 took additional samples after the Tuesday effort.

U.S. officials have said during the past several days that it may never be known if Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test.

Bush: Claim is enough of a threat
When President Bush announced Wednesday that he wanted the United Nations and North Korea’s neighbors to take steps aimed at pressuring Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program, Bush indicated that he saw little distinction between an actual nuclear test by North Korea and its announcement of one.

“The United States is working to confirm North Korea’s claim, but this claim itself constitutes a threat to international peace and stability,” Bush said.

Word of the test results came as the U.S. continued its diplomatic offensive at the United Nations and with Pyongyang’s neighbors, aimed at forcing North Korea to drop its efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Members of the U.N. Security Council agreed Friday on the wording of a resolution that would clamp sanctions on the communist country. The draft would authorize non-military sanctions against the North, and it says that any further action the council might want to take would require another U.N. resolution.

It also eliminates a blanket arms embargo from a tougher, previous draft, instead targeting specific equipment for sanctions including missiles, tanks, warships and combat aircraft.

The United States, which has sought tough steps that could leave the door open to a blockade or other military action, has had to give ground to gain support from China and Russia. Those countries, along with South Korea, have been reluctant to abandon diplomatic efforts to resolve the standoff.

Maybe this is why China is sticking up for them... " awwww they were just kidding".
This doesnt mean it didn't happen but it is odd.

This is also why the UN is begging the US to not go off like lunatics and start sanctioning korea.  What's sad is that when i read this, it was a US claim.  Yet the day of, south korean seismologists confirmed a seismic event at the same time that would be equivelent to a hiroshima sized bomb (12kilotons i believe vs. 20megatons we have today).  My first thoughts were that in their haste to be paranoid as usual, the north koreans just planted about 12,000 pounds of TNT into the ground and detonated it to make it look like they tested a nuke.  And after reading this, as skeptical as i am of US rerports saying such things, I have revisited that possibility.

Anyone else think they just blew up a bunch of explosives underground to add to their threatening rhetoric?  They are a starving country, they may actually be afraid of US aggressions, but they may also be trying to play games. I mean honestly, does this guy look like he's gonna nuke the US?

What I don't get is:
If you assume they faked the nuke test...why?

If they are a starving country, a nuke test = possible sanctions.  If they are trying to make things easier for themselves, why would they call the US to the carpet if it was fake?

What's to gain by faking it?

Look at me, I might have a bomb!!! Or I might not.

The only possible reason I can think of is to claim you have the bomb, so if I'm aggressive people will think twice about attacking me?

So has NK gone mental or are they planning an excursion to SK?

Trying to trick us into military action so they can add to the "there were no WMD's" and we attacked attitude could be a possiblity. Imagine if we did attack and it was just a hoax. It's a setup I tell ya .

I can imagine several reasons to fake the test.  First, in his government, Kim Jong Il has total control over his people, what they read, see, and hear.  His carefully planned propaganda is probably filled with all the anti-american language you can imagine, while he bolsters his own nations ego by reporting nuclear power and nuclear weaponry.  Detonating a bunch of non-nuclear ordnance to a bunch of slaves believing it is a nuke would be easy to pass off.  I'm guessing the ordinary NK resident doesn't have a geiger counter to measure radioactivity.

They are in fact starving..the people that is..Kimmy is living phat I'm sure..just look at that pump hairdo.  But Kimmy is actually quite a paranoid person, and he has been threatened by US aggression in the form of George Bush who has already attacked one of the sovereign nations on the axis of evil list...and Kimmy's country is next on that list.  So clearly the idea of Kimmy being reactionary towards such threats would produce the rhetoric and counter-threats of US aggression by saying they have nukes, here's a test detonation (with no radiation signature), here's some type-O-dong missile tests (which failed), and now I want attention and respect!  You better leave us alone or I'll nuke your ass, says Kimmy...as he shivers in fear of the red white and blue.

You know, this is going nowhere and my examples are probably not as clear as I'd want them to be.  But it's plausable that it was a fake nuke test.  If it was to satisify and stimulate his people, then he's spot on for that.  If he's trying to instill fear in the eyes of the American people who want to attack his country, he's done it (I'm sure gun sales went through the roof as soon as people here imagined 1 million north koreans storming across the country after NK's threat of action hit our headlines).  If he's just trying to get food to his people via negotiations, he's now in the position to do it..if he's fooled the world with his nuke test.

No, they're clear.  The problem is that I see the same thing - but its the results that good ol' Kimmy ain't getting.

1) Has nuke = world gives him less
2) Fakes nuke = world gives him less

Way to shaft your people more Kim!

And as far as instilling fear on the US, I'd say its not nearly as bad as it is in China and Japan!  The guy is pushing himself into a Cuba-like situation, except in this case there's a little larger military force there.

Chef, is this a good thing for NK?  You think this was a smart move on his part?  Either by getting a nuke or faking having one?

what i love, is (since so many discount sarin gas and enrichment parts as being weapons components since they were "old"), is that Hussein faked having WMD's, and everyone gets pissed when we smack his ass, lil Kim either has them or is faking it, and everyone gets pissed that we are using diplomacy

I think to Kimmy, as mental as he may be, having the appearance of having a nuke, is just as important as having one.

If he has one (in appearance or not), he can negotiate.  Theoritically, a negotiation for food, nuclear "power" (which he's already received from clinton in the form of sealed, light water reactors), and other trade benefits are easier to get if you give up your "nuke program."  Proving he has no nukes is easy if he actually has none.

So i think this may be a good reason if he's faking.  personally, i think he did make and test a real nuke, but i wouldn't rule out a fake.  I don't understand how air samples can prove or disprove it, but i'll take their word for it.  If someone unbiased can go take a ground sample and test, that'd be more conclusive i bet.  or, having someone verify more nukes via inspection would definately end the debate.

Yeah, but to be honest, hasn't he already been offered similiar "no nuke" packages in the past, in exchange for not being a 'tard?

kids in america on the street eat garbage.  maybe they should eat bark.  maybe they should attack bush's dog and eat it so that he realizes his efforts are needed at home.

Since it didn't come out right, let me try that again - he's been offered incentive packages before for not being a 'tard...so why would he press for the special nuke door prize when the packages he's been offered in the past are the same exact package?
