In recent years tesco has been and still is growing very fast, expanding into more countries, and its soon even going to be opening in the usa, its been expanding into many areas of retail including electronics and its soon going to release software with the tesco brand on it..

for those who have no idea what tesco is, its a supermarket chain much like wal-mart etc

anyways my question is, would this great business ever become the No1 supermarket chain in the world?
they are so cheap, reliable and well EVERYWHERE, well here in the uk anyways.

Publix is good, but unfortunately they are only in Florida for what I have seen.  I like the store, but they arent here in Indiana.  Ive got 3 choices....Wal-Mart, Kroger, or Marsh.  There used to be a fourth choice, but it closed about 2 months ago.

Well, here in Australia we have Woolworths and Coles as the two big players. They've both roughly the same size as each other, and are pretty much clones. If someone from overseas wanted to come and buys them up with a takeover bid... then ouch, it'd be a one-player monopoly all of a sudden. s'yeah. Let's avoid one big chain ruling the world.

I used to work at a place called The Warehouse about ten years ago, much like wal-mart.  For a while we were selling some Tesco products.  They weren't that popular with locals, but visitors from the UK lapped them up.

Wal-mart will buy Tesco or Tesco will buy Wal-mart.

Then it will be world's biggest supermarket.

I suspect Wal-mart will buy Tesco considering the Walton family (its co-owners) are five of the wealthiest people in the world.

Hey van, we have Cole's here in the US too. Woolworths used to be the big department/convenience store in the US back in the '50s and '60s, but K-mart kicked its ass, then Wal-mart kicked K-mart's ass.

We may have Coles and Safeway (aka Woolworths) in Victoria but when it comes to country towns like the one I live in, IGA rules.

IGA stands for Independant Grocers Australia and the best thing about IGA is that it is owned by local people and run by local people. IGA provides jobs for local teenagers and students and pay A LOT more than Safeway and Coles do.

(I worked at both Safeway and IGA, so I think I'd know

And the great thing about IGA is that it values customer service over cost. Whenever there is more than two people waiting to buy at the register they always call another person to the next register. At safeway they have about five people and 15 empty checkouts and always have big queues.
