What motherboard do you have - does it have an AGP slot or PCI-E?

What budget are you looking at and what country are you in?

i run bf2 at 1024X768 on medium with dynamic shadows off and 4x AA and 100% view distance scale with an average fps of 50-80fps depending on the thing on you're screen.

My comp specs:
3ghz pro
2gb of DDR-400
6600 GT 128mb GDDR3 Overclocked (BFG Tech)

With 250 pounds thats like...450 canadian. you can buy a really decent card with that sum of money

edit: 7600GT from XFX aint bad. it's about 200 canadian dunno about british pound though..just save your money when Direct X10 comes out. it's worth the wait....about 2 months

For that kind of money you can buy a really top notch Geforce 7900GT or 7950 card (not the GX2) that will do what you want and more.  A lot more.  http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html

However, my recommendation would be the OcUK Galaxy GeForce 7950 GT OC SILENT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/HDCP/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-OK).  It's on pre-order at the moment and comes in £40 below your budget.  It has a Zalman cooler fitted which means it's going to be quiet and over-clockable.  And it beats the XFX 7800 GTX I bought aboiut six months ago, that cost about 50% more and is quite noisy.

Even cheaper would be the OcUK GeForce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-OK)  which runs about the same as my 7800 GTX card, is available now and costs £165.

If you had my budget, you'd get the 7950?
My mate said I should get this card:

EDIT: 3rd one down!

can you give me the pro's and con's for both?
and if you had to pick between one, which one?
thanks!

Right now, I don't have any problems with running software at the highest levels of detail so the card I have - the noisy equivalent of the 7900GT - is easily enough.  In fact, my rig is very similar to yours except I have a 3.0Ghz P4 instead of the AMD chip, so I know you'll be experiencing the same quality of graphics as I get (or slightly better).  Since you're running at lower resolution - I'm on 1280x1024 - you'll get a better framerate.

Having said that, I don't have the foggiest what DX10 is going to bring or when it's coming out.  Since you've got a 64 bit processor, you'll be able to run Vista when it's released and DX10 is likely to be a step-change from DX9 quality so you might want to wait for Vista and see.

You mate recommended an ATI card.  I went to a LAN party in July and the machines with ATI cards sounded much louder when pushed on graphics than those with Nvidia cards.  But then if you have a modicum of skill or dexterity you can change the cooler for a Zalman one and reduce the noise.  OcUK don't modify any of the ATI cards, as far as I know, so you'd have to do this yourself.

Anyway, your budget will not be stretched.  Any of these cards will do the job you want.  If I were in your position, I'd probably wait a while until the 7950GT was available and then see whether any official announcements had been made about DX10.  If nothing was on the horizon immediately, I'd go for the 7950GT - it's cheap, it's promised to be quiet and it's more powerful than you need (got a bit of future-proofing).

7950GT or (if you can afford it) X1950XTX

Both of those cards are amazing right now.
